I started putting the SBC in my 31 frame  . It is a stock 31 frame that is boxed. How do I measure this out so that it don't get all F#$*ed up? I am sure it is not as easy as setting it in the frame where it looks good and welding up the mounts, or is it? I would love some pics of simular set up's if you have some. Thanks in advance.:D

Thats pretty much what i did. Bolted the motor to the trans. set the thing in where it cleared the floor boards and fire wall recesses. Leveled the carb mount and centered the crank between frame rails. You may not be able to exactally center or level, but do what is possable. make mounts.

Distributor diameter will determine where you set it as to front/rear.
It being an SBC, you can get the early dist. which is smaller, or go old Mallory dual point, or conversion types using HEI etc. If running stock fuel pump, it will be close to rt side rail of frame, esp when boxed, so look that over closely too.

  5. Its pretty damned obvious that you don't know how to use the search function on this forum, and instead of spending the time to do a little research you throw this question out and want everybody to hold your hand. It don't work quite that way on the HAMB. We have a lot of damned smart experienced builders on here, but we expect you to do a bit of the fact finding yourself!!! You can take a look at the link I have posted, and at the link posted immediately before this one--they will help a lot. But get off your *** and do a bit of research too---What you are asking for has been covered about ten thousand times here on the HAMB already.---Brian

I apologize for not meeting your standards sir. I am new to the hamb so I guess I am new to performing searches and ect. I was just looking for some freindly advice from freindly guy's that enjoys cars and helping young guys learn about them, I guess I was under the impression that that is what hot rodders do. Maybe I was wrong! Maybe instead of jumping down someones throat you could explain how to use the search function.

Lighten up on the brother:( To properly get the engine set up, you really need to roughly get the body, radiator etc setting on the frame so you know where to locate your complete engine/trans package. It's a lot of work to do it right, and from one hammer, just tack weld everything in if you aren't 100 percent. That way, it's easier to cut the welds. I moved my engine 3 times before I was happy. Good luck!

I've come to find that there are many different kinds of people on the Hamb with many different at***udes. Rather than nicely tell you about the search function, they would rather make you feel like you ruined their day by posting your thread that is not nearly as cool as the threads they post, how dare you!!! Anyways, old guys are grumpy, yeah, try the search function though and you should find plenty of posts on this. I'm actually about to drop the motor in my A coupe as well. Take care.

  9. Scroll up to the very top of this page. Find the radio ****on that says search.(directly below the HAMB crest) click it. Type in words that are relevant to what you are searching for. Click the ****on that says GO .

Thanks man, I found some other info as well so if this is offensive to the HAMB then we can end this post. Thanks for the help that you guys gave me, it was appreciated and not taken for granted.

  11. When placing the motor have the body in place, ****** bolted up, front accessories on the motor, radiator mocked up, steering mocked up, and the biggest of all, have the car sitiing on the ground at ride height. If you have headers be sure to make considerations as to what kind of clearences will be needed or a set of custom headers is in your future.

"MOCK IT UP BEFORE YOU WELD IT UP"

    Good luck

    PROPS!! That was cool.

  13. Golden31---and---If your going to hang around on the HAMB---Get used to taking abuse from grumpy old ****s!!! (and I'm one of the nicer ones!!!) If your body is setting on the frame in the stock location, (not channeled and using the original mounts)and you are running the stock model A 103 1/2" wheelbase---and if you plan on running a stock hood and keeping your radiator/grillshell in the stock location-----Then you are going to have to put in a recessed firewall with a minimum of a 4" deep recess. and it will have to be a high enough recess to accomodate the distributor. I am running a smallblock in a model A and can give you any dimensions that you may require.----Brian

looks like you got the right idea about putting a motor in your car, doing research is the most important thing, remember there isnt a stupid question just stupid answers

i helped a buddy put a sbc in his 28 29 model A it fit pretty good, but we had to modify the firewall for the dist.,we used a hurst motor mount up front and made a transmission cross member for the rear

  20. Egotistical Pig I may be, but, uh, thats Brian Angus.---and yes , I do a few things beside lurk around attacking new guys. I f you take a look at the number of posts I have here on the HAMB, and the hundreds of "how to articles" that I have posted here, you will figure out that I have a few other things that to occupy my time than eating babies.:D :D :D

Gentlemen...the HAMB is currently in a milder, friendlier mode. If you want to discover how it can be, take a look at some older posts.
BTW, using the search function does help, a lot. Brianangus is one of our best, and most generous contributors. May it prove worthwhile to ya.

  23. And a gracious thank you to you, Pitman. And an apology to the young fellow who I ragged on so viciously. I didn't notice that he was a fng with only 3 posts:eek:  . Brian

hey golden im not sure if mentioned in all the drama above but, one piece of advice you can build a car on the side of a mountain as long as it leveled properly ,make sure th frame of the car is level front to back and left to right .if you dont do this first every thing else is a waste of time but as i did see mentioned keep an eye on ride hieght for all your clearance issues, when it comes to ****** mounts ect.take note of rearend off sets find the center line of your frame ,use plumb bob it helps alot and also pinion angle !!! good luck;)

  26. Brian jumped your *** a little bit, maybe he had a bad day. But he is one of the sharpest guys around and has helped me out more than once. Stick around Goldie, this is a great site, and Brian is one of the reasons why.

Wow, arnt you glad you asked.....I almost did...but then saw one post that recomended the search and I was there. and i know how it feels, new site, not sure where to go right away, but do yourself a favor and search "how to" or "brainangus"and just read, it'll take you hours to read it all, and save a bunch of the threads in your favorites so you can refer back to them. Its amazing how much hes put out there for info, i just joined myself a few days ago, i spend more time searching his how to's than I do looking at new threads.
One newbie to another, welcome, looks like your building a sweet ride.
