What year chevy trucks are the same? I have a 51 3 Window and I want a 5 window. What years did they make 5 windows in and how many years are the cabs the same aside from the number of windows?
They made the 5 windows from 47 to 54. The 53 and 54 have a curved windshield. Only other differences over the years are door handles, vent windows in the doors, vents on the side of the cowl and 47 did not have the gas tank in the cab. Clark
47-53 are mostly the same. the 1959 parts book lists the corner gl*** for 47-55 models (54-55 are one piece curved windshield, there are some other differences from 53 and older) door changed over the years, 47-50, 51, 52-up are all different part numbers.
To the best of my knowledge..47 second series through 55 first series were all available in the deluxe cab (5 window). 47 through 51 or 52 had flat 2 piece gl*** for the windshield....the years following had the curved one piece windshield. There are some differences in the doors (wing windows or not....twist handle or push ****on door handle), but the doors are interchangeable. I think that's the biggest differences in these years...I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will correct me, but either case, I hope it helps
RPO 387 Rear Corner Windows. They were not part of the Deluxe Equipment package, it was a separate option. Same with the later years small/big back window option, which was NOT part of the custom cab package.
He was probably paying you guys a compliment....that's how I took it... Hell, he had an answer in something like 14minutes.
15 minutes, I ****...but it's been a busy day, just got back from a meeting around 8 (az time) hamb response time is a fun subject, no need to get upset about it. The best ones are those that get answered before the question is asked! I've done it twice
'51-2-3 DeLuxe cabs (meaning plated grille, bumper, bright w/s & door trim) are scarce due to Korean war. Grab a copy of Jim Carter's catalog for a long list of a lot of the many subtle changes. 5 window cab was a separate option some years.
You do know that you don't have to change your whole cab out. The roof bolts on and there is a seam in the door pillar and the windshield pillar that can be taken apart to replace the roof with a five window one from a rusty cab. Just a thought. Pat.
Response time was fast, but the details of the answer on the question are in some case inaccurate. There are a number of differences in these cabs over the years. If same means exactly the same your choices are somewhat limited. If same means the same basic shape the options are open. The earliest cabs have a drivers side vent door, and do not have the fuel inlet hole in the cab. They also have the smoothest firewall. The first change was the firewall ceased to be smooth, and basically just got some stampings in it to make it stiffer. Next the fuel tank moved into the cab and you get the filler hole. At the same time the rear mount changed. Instead of the early type single point mount, they began using a stirrup mount on each side of the frame. Unfortunately I don't recall the exact year of each of the above changes, but the ones I've listed are '47 (second style, though not called 2nd series by Chevy) through '50. A '51 cab has the firewall stampings and fuel filler hole. It does not have the drivers side cowl vent. It is the first year for wing windows in the doors and the last year for the turn-down type handles. Changing door types is not always the trivial operation some who claim. Ive seen some guys really struggle to make it work. '52 is the first year of the push-****on door handle and '53 is hard to tell from a '52. '54 is the first year for the curved gl***, not earlier as someone said above. The dash and gauge style change in '54. '55 1st is basically identical to the '54, as least as far as the kind of details I've listed. <O</O The '54 and '55 1st GMC cabs are different from Chevy cabs in that the dash is completely different, using individual instruments instead of the pair of pods. My personal p***ion is the '54 and '55 1st GMC's so I know more details about those than the others, but along the way I've bumped into a lot of these differences.<O</O The 5-window version of the cab was available in all years, and while often combined with the deluxe option, deluxe 3-window trucks are not uncommon.
We had an old '50 COE that had the 5-window cab. Sold it to a guy in the spring who's building it on some other frame.
'54 on the plastic wiring harness, '55 1st. is still 6 volt ... open driveline is the biggest '55 1st. mechanical change.
Gages changed with the introduction of the high pressure oiler as well. You can buy the 5 window steel as a repop now and cut your cab up to add it. 55 S1 was mostly a rebadge because the stampings weren't ready in time for the trucks of 55-59. They did go with the open driveline and plastic wiring but I'm not certain about the 6/12V thing. None of these really affect the cab, though.
the 54-55 GMC dash is the main reason I built my new shop truck. I've always thought the GMC chrome grills were cool also
Thanks fo the info. It helped a bunch. As for HAMB response time I would have liked to beat Roothawgs time of 3 min but Im nowhere near as popular as him. And it make posts more fun.
Those doors won't interchange The latch and it's location as well as the striker/jamb are different. I didn't know that little tidbit until I had two trucks here doing subcontract paint work at the same time.... and I had to repaint one set of doors(hey, the restorer told me which ones were which colors, so... )
