Hotrods with tractor motors

    I was looking at a FORD tractor motor the other day. (I have this Banger thing....LOL) Industrial engines are huge, torquey beasts that had a lot of modern features. Even way back in the twenties and thirties, they had insert bearings, pressure oiling and overhead valves.

    This led me to thinking....What tractor motor would be suitable in a rod? My Dad had a VAC model Case with a huge banger in it and an Allis-Chalmers too.

    The AC ran like a scalded cat. With some external machining on the block (to reduce the weight and get rid of the tractor suspension mounts), a log manifold with twin carbs and fabricated aluminum valve cover, side cover and oil pan, I could see it in a car.

    Has anyone seen or heard of this being done? TYVM to all, MIZ

    Ford Cost cutter 4 cylinder.219 cu in ,OHV found in Fordson Tractors,Thames Trucks etc and will bolt to a Flat head trans. it's a Very tall engine though .

    i have a 53' ford NAA golden jubilee,4cyl ohv(first year) power steering.... tons of torque but under 40hp. they make all their power under 10mph.

    i think Ive seen it on this board, their was a Model A with a 4 cyl turbo Kubota motor that came out of a Kubota ditch Digger.

    The big gas motors from ford or IH look like nice pieces, i dont know what their RPM range would be.

    Im laughing now picturing in my head a model A with a 2 cylinder JD motor running down the road pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop

    I'd love to build a rod with a huge GMC V6, pretty much the same idea. I just see issues with it being slow, but still managing to snap parts like twigs.

    Step up to the Roline 805 inch V8. OHV with intake and exhaust both on top. Had one in the ten ton in the army. Sounded neat.

    you could use the little ford N-series tractor motors. they are half a flathead v8. I know where there is a bellhousing to adapt one to a ford v8 ******......

    We went an auction a while back a guy built a motorcycle out of John Deere 2 Cyl Diesel, I think it was a model R. If you look in the threads i've started there's one for Tractor Guys on The H.A.M.B. might find somethin'.
     
  10. They also make a V12-702 CID, which is two of the V6's front to back. It runs 4 of the V6 heads. The V12 was used in large over the road trucks which used two trannies back to back like a 4x2, 4x4, 5x4, etc,.
     
  11. That would turn a lot of heads... you'd need like a 2.48 rearend to make 65 with it though.

    I just saw a picture of a roadster with one of those V12 GMC truck motors. I think in Hemmings. It was built by the guys that built Jay Leno's Tank motored roadster

    There is a Ford industrial design that came in 132 and 172 CI sizes. It also was used in M151 jeeps. They can be found in industrail or farm s**** yards. With the number of 2.3 engines available now, why other with a heavy design when a light design will be easier and probably less expensive?

    i think you'd find a tractor motor to be very disappointing. sure they are relatively torquey for their small displacement, but not THAT torquey. much of if comes from loooow gearing. and they won't spin very fast. add to that the lack of speed parts. probably have piss poor breathing capability on the heads. it'd be a lot of work for not much return.

    Industrial engines are cool though...I've owned several over the years , but mostly diesel. The let down in a Rod would be the low RPM's & their heavy.

    Just for a example, plan on say 1500 RPM's max. for cruising.

    Alot of the stuff we use for speed had roots in making power for trucks and tractors.

    A guy I know bought a demolished industrial power unit with a small 4cyl diesel engine, forget the brand, installed in in a mid 80s Ford 3/4 ton pickup with standard shift. Said he got incredible gas mileage but any incline on the highway when pulling a trailer with a Model A aboard had to be taken at top speed and was at 35-45mph by the time he got to the top of the hill.

    whats the bore and stroke on a Ford tractor, thats the important thing everything else can be changed radically

    Now i remember. It was at SEMA and in the Barrett-Jackson handout. So I guess that means it's worth lots and lots of money. Looked nice.

    Old combines are a great source of GM engines. Lots of them had 292 inline sixes.

    Half of a 239 V8=119.5". 3/3/16X3/3/4. As stated, they did have adjustable lifters, and yes, people use them in the V8s. Just a bit heavier than the Johnsons.:D

    Theres a guy selling a complete 702 V12 GMC on stovebolt,I wanna say its 1500.00 including the trailer to haul it home in as I recall , just saw it a couple of days ago.
     
  27. I think Kaiser used a Continental flat 6, same as my forklift. And when it was running, it did 30+ mph on the road.

    I didn't trust the wonky rear steer faster than that.

    Oliver tractors used an ohv inline six 231 or 265 c.i. back in the forties and fifties that was very similar to chevys. These are popular with the pulling crowd and have some aftermarket support to step up the power.

    After kicking the 1800lb (+/-) pig off the trailer, mount the largest gas tank you can find, then incorporate it into the design of the car!:p
