I'm getting ready to paint my ride HOK Candy Brandywine....my only problem is I'm undecided which basecoat to go with. I've narrowed it down to Zenith Gold or Galaxy Grey. I've searched the internet for anything painted with a zenith gold base, I CANT FIND ANYTHING. I've seen rides/bikes painted with Solar Gold base, but not Zenith Gold. Has anyone out there used/seen Zenith gold as a base. If so can yo describe the look of zenith gold or can you post pics. Whats the difference between the look of Zenith Gold vs. Solar Gold? Please post pics.... Also in your opinion should I go with zenith gold or galaxy grey....Thank You
There was a 63 Impala on the cover of lowrider magazine last year some time. It was brandywine over Galaxy Grey and it was by far the nicest candy I have ever seen. One day I plan to spray something I own with it.
HOK sells paint chip books for around $35 or $40 that use real paint for the samples, and you can compare a bunch of different candies over different base coats side by side. I think I remember Brandywine over practically anything looks good. It just gets a little darker over darker base coats, but the color doesn't change that dramatically. You can go brighter or darker by putting more or less coats of candy on it. They sell small samples of ready-to-spray candies and base coats for guys that do airbrush artwork. You could buy a couple little 4 oz bottles and try it out on a test panel to see if you like it before investing the big bucks.
yeh you are spending a LOT of money on a paint job if you are using HOK products...take the extra time and a few bucks to do some test panels.. pictures off the web (or colour cards on the web)are usually absolutely no indication of what a candy job will look like, do test panels, and do them on an old fender or something with curves in it, flat panels also dont tell the full story with candy over mettallics.
What's this going on? That helps alot with the color choice. There's such a dramatic difference between those two chips how did you narrow it to them? Solar gold is more "gold" than zenith gold which is more light yellow.
I've seen pictures of two vehicles painted with a galaxy grey base and Brandywine over it (one with ice pearl mixed in and one without)....I really liked the way both looked (dark in some areas then real rich/deep when the sun hit it). The other day when I was driving I saw a brandywine painted vehicle that I loved. I flagged the guy down and he stopped and we started talking. He gave me the name of the shop. I called the shop who painted his vehicle and they vaguely remembered painting the vehicle....Ther guy at the shop said it was most likely a Zenith Gold base, because that particular shop almost never uses Solar Gold. The zenith gold car looked maroon, but in the sun it looked BRIGHT, probably not as deep as the grey.
DO A TEST, PERIOD!!! As mentioned, do it on a curved surface like an extra part, or mailbox, or toilet seat (no ****), or something you can hang on a wall. Then go outside and look at it in the sun, then wait for the clouds to dim things out. Walk around it in both light situations, then walk around it again. You can't really go by a pic, though it will give you an overall feel for the look of the car in any given color. Good luck. Let's see your result after. Loppy.
Yes, do a test to be sure! I painted a 70 Impala convert Brandywine over galaxy grey. Just a darker version of the Brandy over silver. The same with Brandy over Zenith. It will just be a slightly darker version of the same color over solar gold. But I think the Brandywines DO look better over gold toned bases. Even the Impala, over grey, I wound up putting a bit of gold microflake in the first couple coats of Kandy to give it that slight gold tone. Can't go wrong with Brandywine over anything!
It depends on what you want- the gold will give the brandywine a "richer" tone and make the reds stand out, while the gray should give the color a more subdued tone.
Thanks Chopolds, you wouldn't happen to have a pic. of the Brandywines you sprayed? My email is cmanley25@sbcglobal.net Thank You
My `37 Plymouth, painted HOK Brandywine over Zenith Gold. The picture may be a little dark, but the gold will cause the red to 'explode' more, giving it more of a candy apple look than a pale brick red would look like with the silver primer. Hope this helps.
Thanks Grinder, nice ride. Thats the first car if seen with a Zenith Gold base and I've been searching the internet for 4 days now! Much appreciated. Its looks like it was somewhat of a cloudy day. When its cloudy the zenith gold/brandywine looks to be maroon. The Galaxy grey, when its cloudy, looks to be very dark almost black. How many coats of zenith did you spray on your 37? The galaxy grey looks like it goes from very dark, almost black to red, depending on the light and which angle you catch it at. Does the zenith look bright gold in some lights, maroon in others and red in others?
Thats what I'm looking 4 ,Slow and Low, peoples/a painters opinion which I should go with (Zenith or Galaxy)...keep em coming
2 coats of Zenith. 3 coats of Brandy, 3 coats of clear. I got a deal on the paint so I used it up. Yeah it was an overcast day when that pic was taken. I had both headlight buckets test shot first, one with gold, one with gray. I liked the gold better. It brought the red out better.
