  9. Here are a couple more cars. No real lettering, but numbers count, right?

Also check out Alan's site, he is really great. He did the 404 car, and his son did the Camshaft Spl. http://alanjohnsongrafix.com/

Since there are some perfect examples here, I'll hi-jack this thread.
It's a dead give away that door art or advertising isn't really old when you paint a 7 number phone number (or even worse a web address). Back in the day they used exchange letters for the first 2 digits (remember PEnnsylvania6-5000!).

When I was home for Thanksgiving, I asked my Dad how they came up with the letters and words for the exchange. All he remembered was that in the San Mateo, Ca area the exchange was DIamond for everyone. He didn't know how that name came to be, but everyone used it.

So, I've been doing more searching to find what my phone exchange letters would have been. I was going to make one up, but I found this resource. The Telephone Exchange Name Project.
    http://ourwebhome.com/TENP/TENproject.html

With it I was able to figure out that the exchange in my area was AMherst, so my number was AM6xxxx.

I think its pretty cool and it should help with your authentic door art.

The Number on my International P/U above is from around 1934 and just has 4 numbers and it is the original paint on that truck.

I noticed that, very cool. That was before they went to the lettered exchanges or from a very small town.

Also, sometimes the exchanges used 2 letters and 4 numbers instead of 5. But if you are trying to use a modern number of your home or business you need 7 digits.

Be brave, get out the brushes and go for it. Just give them to someone who can lay it out! The "Esso Bee":

You need to look away from the pinstrip stuff and find information on old school sign painting.

  22. As an old sign writer I can look and tell what is hand lettered, I can also tell if it is original. I can also tell if it was done using masking, or vinyl. It is just like valuable antiques, some are real and correct and many are not. The ones that are original should be valued as real art. The spirit of the day is cool.

Some great artwork in this thread. Enjoyed them all. For some examples of number styles, go to Flickr.com They have groups or pool of photos featuring numbers. If the link doesn't work, use search engine and put in the word ; numbers , then click group
