I will be working on a 1966 Chevelle for a Customer that a previous shop back halfed the frame with an Alston kit. The customer didn't want this type of a build (tubbed, roll cage, fuel cell) etc., so I need to find out what year of Chevelle frame beside 1966 will interchange.

I THINK 64-67 interchange, but we'll see what the others think

64-67, but the length between the rear kickup and the bumper mounts might vary a little bit. It's straight rail back there though, so it wouldn't be too hard to make the wrong length one work.

If you plan to change the whole frame...check the front closely too. The 67 may have had the offset frame horns to clear a side tank radiator.

Pontiac or Buick may work also.

I saw somewhere (latest Goodguys maybe?) that someone is offering complete new frames for '64-72's set up with an X-member, 9" rear, and tubular front A-arms. Looked pretty slick. Might want to investigate them.

According to Hollanders, 64-65 do NOT fit. Station wagon and El Camino are also different from the p***enger cars, and Pontiac, Buick are not the same as Chevelle. That's according to what Hollanders Interchange says, not from any personal experience on my part.

Cyclone I will keep you in mind. The owner doesn't want any of it and so it will be for sale I'm sure! You would need to buy it all and that includes 6 point roll cage, Tub kit, rear half kit with 4 link and adjustable coil over shocks. Like I said, I will keep you in mind and p*** this on to the owner. Your only oh say a little over 2 hrs away from us.

This is why it helps to put where you live. Joe lives in California, but it could be San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, etc.

The 1966 and 1967 Chevelle frames are the same. I would stick with a 2-dr frame if it's a two door car. You might want to check a few local cl***ic salvage yards in your area. All American Auto parts shows they have one for $800. 800-955-4999 They are in Washington state.

Looks like you got it covered with the 66-67 frame. If you're looking just know that convertible frames are different than a hardtop/sedan frame.

  12. convert frames are "boxed"
same dimensions as a 2 door
also the super sports had the boxed frame

The 2 and 4 dr sedans and 2 and 4 dr hardtops all used the same frame. Station wagon and El Camino were different. The convertible frame can be used, but you need to use the regular frame trans crossmember.

Any A-body frame from 64-67 will work. holanders says no How ever the interchange book ONLY lists direct bolt ons. The frame horn front and rear are different for all four years. Not hard to deal with. The boxed frame were found in convertables, El Caminoes and Vista wagons with the gl*** roof. Because of the boxed frame the ****** crossmembers are different. and need to stay with there respective frames. Pontiac crossmembers were rubber mounted whereas chevy crossmembers were bolted solid. Also the 67 frames had differnt spring perches and will not work with the earlier springs. as far as converting the respective frames the the front frame horns need to be altered back to behind the front pair of body mounts. and for the rear the rear crossmembers are diffent as well as the rear pair of body mounts. basicly plan on the first and last foot of the frames need to be reworked. the only other differance is between STD and Auto trans cars. the STD trans cars had a Z bar mount welded to the frame. taking the above into consideration and you should be good to go:)

Considering that even if you find the correct year so you can start all over again in building a ch***is to suit the customer's need; check out the Detroit Speed & Engineering ch***is availble from The Roadster Shop in Mundelin, IL. www.roadstershop.com.

    Yes, they are...all $15,000 worth!

I am doing a '66 442 frame up for a guy. Frame was junk....we couldn't find a good ragtop frame so we had to fix it. Here is a link to what it looks like. Hollander shows each year and make different, but I guess they interchange.

pretty sure you have to use the 'vert trans x-member as the frame is boxed like you said and the length is different other than that, you are correct.

Chevelle frames are NOT the same length of the Buick/Olds/Pontiac...but they will work if you cut the rear section off (3 1/2 inch ) difference and replace it with the Chevelle rear. I am currently doing a 66 Buick Skylark for Fastest Street Car Mag and we are using a 67 Chevelle frame.( with the Buick rear section )..the Buick was just too rusty to use. The series on the car started with this month's issue.
