I was amazed when I came across a complete Cook banger set up for sale on ebay today. They are very rare, and impossible to find. I Who is running one, and does anyone have pics? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...ndexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting
A guy named Bob lee used to run one, i think he p***ed away. I think Jim Brierley ran one in the recent past. They make alot of power.
That mag drive is beautiful, That is at least $9000 in my fantasy speed part bid book. I dig the crudeness of the castings, reminds me of my home foundry, That crude look is the one thing I have mastered!! LOL. Great thread, refreshing stuff.
That's a fine piece. There were so many production OHV setups and a whale of a lot of one-offs or under 10 unit pieces. Amazing how they consistly turn up from collections as the old guys die and still from barns and old school bus bodies in junkyards long abandoned.
I have seen the one from Denver. WOW.! The engine has a long history of lakes, circle track and street use.It is in a roadster built as a hotrod in 1937 and is in beautiful unrestored condition. The locals probably have photos and more information, but seeing that car was the highlight of a trip to Colorado last summer, and I hope to see it again. Why do magazines all seem to ignore cars like this [except HOP UP]
Cook made em up till 1949 then dropped it ,held on to the patterns and concentrated on the flatty stuff as well as the quickie. A few years back a guy calling himself Cook's Performance Products made parts and had borrowed our patterns when Cook was alive and made his own Cook head. Without looking at em, can't tell ya if this is one of Carl's or Cook's Both were cast iron, and they run like hell!
Are you speaking of Carl Love? He once said he had a set of Cook patterns. I'm not sure but I think he might have p***ed away, he used to sell some gaskets Are you familiar with the head that Dan Eubanks is casting? I have heard that it is pretty close to the Cook design.
Bob Lee ran one, and he has p***ed on. I don't think that Carle Loveless ever produced any heads, he did make copper head gaskets for awhile and some Winfield carb gaskets. I ran my Cook for many years and it will run again next August on the salt, in V4/BFL, ****ing alky and running it thru a turbo. The Eubanks head is patterned after the Cook, with some improvements. The originals ran good on gas but needed some minor changes to run good on fuel. Jim Brierley
I've run my Cook for years at the drags lakes and Bonneville. It has always run great but am having carb trouble with it now, on a turbo. Ran 138 this year on the salt. Also ran a Cyclone flathead some years back in my '31 pickup, liked it too! Jim Brierley, Temecula, CA
2010 update on my Cook at Bonneville. We re-set the blown gas lakester record to 153.790 with the first run being 156+. I made some changes on the Holley carb and it is running much better. We should have changed gears as it was only pulling 5,000 - 5200 RPM, should be closer to 6,000. I ran a Cyclone flathead on the street for many years, it always ran great. It has a "crows-foot" combustion chamber and 7:1 compression. Used to drive it up to Winfield Weekend back in the 70's.
