Motor and tranny in and I was trying to mock up exhaust. Center dump, 3/4 rear dump and rear dump exhaust manifolds all will hit the steerting gear? Anyone have a 49/50 with a Small block 350? What exhaust are you running on the Drivers side? Headers?

this might sound dumb or lame, and I don't have one of them rigs you speak of but did you try a passenger side manifold that points straight at the floor swapped to the drivers side so it is at the front of the engine? like an old flathead exhaust manifold

I have a 52 chevy-which is the same firewall/inner fender/etc. set-up as your 49. To clear that goofy stock steering, I used a mid-70's Chevy pickup manifold that has a dump just ahead of the rear exhaust port. I had to cut the dump off at an angle, and rotate it a little, then re-weld it back on pointed in a different direction. If you can get it tacked into place, than take it to a pro welder to have it TIG welded for best strength and appearance.

I might be able to wedge my camera in there to get you some pics. If you are real serious, PM me your email address, and I'll see if I can get you some pictures tonite. I have since installed a Mustang II front end, so the clearance is not the issue it once was, but the same manifold is still in place.

I used a 350 from a '76 El Camino, the stock manifolds fit perectly. The driver's side has an arch in it right where the box is.

  5. Sanderson makes a set of headers specifically for that application.

Some late 70-early eighty malibu manifolds might be what you need. Not sure about the exact year. I had one in my 51,slightly grinded, fits ok.

[/ QUOTE ] There has been sever versions of how this is be done, making it work is the bottom line! In everything I read so far none has mounted there SBC 1" to the right! I have a center dump ram horn header, if I have to get something else thats ok to. How did you do the ribs on the firewall.

I mounted it in the middle. But off center sounds like a good idea. Or changing the steering to a Saab900 rack\pinion unit. They are said to fit right in,with one inch spacers between the frame and the unit. But then ofcourse its the stering joints and stuff.... [IMG]
The ribs, yeah. I made new ones, from half way up,and down to the bodymount. It now comes down on the middle of the baseplate there.
To get the th350 to fit,I had to massage the traverse a little.I seem to remember it was dropped a inch or two,and moved about three against the rear of the car. I can try to get some pics this weekend.

Have you already seen this thread? ´49 and ´54 are pretty close each others. I used ram´s horns in my ´53 Bel Air.

Yes I did see that center dump Goats Horn! Good fit!
Originally the plan was to use Waltons motor mount if it work with a Ram Horn header
of any type. There been alot of posts showing Ram Horns working , some requiring
modification and some not! What I should have asked is <font color="red"> </font> Im looking for the best install
with the least amount of medication to anything! Sanderson Headers claims they have
headers that fit, and Waltons has them in there Ad! Im not looking for a money fix
except if its nessary. To keep from doing it was suggested to move the engine 1” to right
on the install. If this is what its going to take to make the engine fit with rams horns, will
do that! If not thats better !

The same applies to the ribs. If I move the engine 1” to the right this might create more
problems, We haven’t started yet , Just trying to clear a path to a clean install. I see in
your picture you have a portion of the right rib outlined is this where you trimmed for the
install? Can you foresee any problems with removing a head or valve cover if needed?

No one has mentioned this that I no of, will there be any problem’s removing a HEI dist
    after the engine installed?

Thanks for the input! keep it comming anyone

Hey, my car here again! Yes this is install pic, which is a bit old picture and may give you a wrong idea, ´cause I removed the hole ribs afterwards (both sides) and I also reshaped the corners (in the middle of the picture). The emergency brake must be moved. And you´re right, head remove is hard and valve covers are tight too. It would be good to use short water pump, I have a long one. Well, HEI doesn´t fit for me. Period.

I made my own mountings, but you have some factory-built ones over there behind the bond! And Corvette-units (don´t remember the year model) are OK too, I will use them in my AV8.

About the HEI dizzy. I have an HEI on th eSBC in my 52. Also have a long water pump and the radiator is was the stock position when I was still running a stock radiator. Anyways, I have had my HEI out more times than I care to remember, and the only real issue is that you hafta remove the cap to get the dizzy out. Once the cap is off, it comes out real easy without touching the firewall.

This photo might be useful to get an idea of where the engine is in relation to the old motor mounts. You can get a little bit of an idea of fore/aft placement.... maybe???

Slide, did you Fab your own mounts? How about the firewall? I see you have a rack! Does your header look like this 89 GMC van header? Thanks for the input! keep it coming!

LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT RAM HORN that allows the least amount of modifying of the body or extra work and expence.

Rhino-- my driver side manifold looks very similar to that one, except it didn't have the port for the oxy sensor. I really don't know what mine came off of, other than a shelf in my dad's garage! I will say that I cut off the "collector" at an angle, and rotated it slightly, then my dad welded it back on. (This was back when I had stock steering. I have a Mustang II in it now, but I am still using the same manifolds.)

And, yep. I fabbed my own motor mounts. They are basically just pieces of heavy flat stock with a tube on the end for the OEM style mounts that bolt to the engine block.

Here's an old post with some info that might help:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&amp;Board=UBB1&amp;Number=456168&amp;Forum=All_Forums&amp;Words=manifold&amp;Match=Entire%20Phrase&amp;Searchpage=0&amp;Limit=25&amp;Old=allposts&amp;Main=455757&amp;Search=true#Post456168

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, all the post help, there about 40 more besides that one in 2004. The proble is most dont say weather the engine is center mounted, stock steering, after market mounts. Finding a install using after market motor mounts and a perfect fit using ram horn headers is a key for all other installs there after. In other words a fatman mount might be right on the money for using a cetrain ram horn, a walton may miss fitting by 3/4".
Thanks for the input! Keep it coming!

By the way Walton has a forum for 49-54 rodders, I have asked a few questions there also, not much traffic, thay have answered a few question so far. http://www.waltonfabrication.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
have to wait a see how it works out in the future.

[/ QUOTE ] I guess if you had not moved it back the exhaust would not have fit? Can you get a HEI dist,in and out of the manafold after installed?

[/ QUOTE ]Slide thanks for the pictures! Is your fire wall just covered with a plate over a un-alter firewall.(except ribs).Im trying to find someone who used the Walton motor mounts on a 50 and could still get his HEI DIZZY out if needed, This is just another issue besides the exhaust!
