I have a problem, sort off. I have wanted to build a gasser for years but never really had the car to do it, nor the money for that matter untill now. I picked up a 1948 A40 Austin Devon (4 Door), this thing is stripped but PERFECT! there is not a dint, scratch or a speck of rust on this thing anywhere. It came with 4 spare doors, two spare front guards, two bonnets (Hoods) and enough grill parts for three cars once again in perfect condition. Now I have a spare motor and gear box, not traditional as its a 351c/toploader but it put out 496hp at the rear wheels in my old car. Should I put it all together to have something fun to play with? Should I try out my metal work skills and two door it? Or am I wasting my time and should pass it on to a restorer?? I don't know too much about Shannon's Nostalgia Drags Series but would it be worth putting it together for a budget race car? What do you Aussy racers think, am I just shitting myself? Doc.
ID DO A GASSER & LEAVE IT A 4dr !! Look back in some history books of Gassers and you will find there were pleanty of Willys, Austin, Perfect, Anglia, & maybe even a Loyd or Hillman that were built from 4dr sedans.
Doc, I don't know about Australia but up here in the USA guys were racing 4 door Austins, Willys and Anglia, Prefects, and having tons of fun, as well as going fast. Traditional racecars are great, but I think blasting down the quarter in something you built is the best, besides 2 doors and 4 doors look the same from the drivers seat! Have Fun!
Go for it. I concur that a four door in this case would be very cool. Almost unlimited choices: tall, stock height, or low could all be just right for this car.
Doc go for it......... It will fit right in @ Nostalgia Drags in Vintage Gas the new wave in the series QQ
I will dig up some pics of it, the car has been between me and my brother-in-law (Who wants to restore it) for a few years. I settled it and the cars mine. I just need to know a little more regarding the limits I can go for rego and also so it will pass scrutineering for the drags. Things like ride height for the front on the street, cage regulations, motor set back and the chassis is feeble! Where do I go as for chassis strength and getting it reged as a 48 Austin and not a 08' Austin? I know some of you Aussies know more!! I guess the A coupe idea is sidelined................... again! Doc.
Speak to your ASRF TAC people in QLD, they administer the rego there (and yes, you'll have to be a member to get rego). Get an ANDRA rule book for the drags. Cruzin mag runs the Nostalgias.
