Heres what I got guys: 283 , new flywheel, starter installed with proper shim High torque delco style starter. Hit the key and the starter gives that Winding non engaged sound. quickly hit the starter switch so the flywheeel bumps ever so slightly, then it starts perfectly. Bad solenoid or bad starter? or a spacing problem( i dont think its that but I could be wrong) Any help would be invaluable, Thanks in advance
I'm not too clear on the explanation. But, it sounds like the Bendix drive is no good. Also, how do you know it's the proper shim, and why is it shimmed?
sounds like an alignment issue.i would test the starter and solenoid if they checkout try removing the shims
used the gauge to get the proper clearance between the flywheel and starter gear shaft Its 1/8 inch i believe. could not get the gauge in with no shim. added a shim and got a nice snug fit with the 1/8 gauge
Well, my money's on a faulty Bendix drive. It's a one-way clutch at the end of the starter shaft that includes the gear. Hit the key once, nothing, hit the key again, normal? Bendix
He says {Hit the key and the starter gives that Winding non engaged sound} He would not get that on a bad solenoid IMO. Based on his info, the solenoid's doing it's job, but the drive is not. "IF" he's getting the winding sound, the solenoid should have done it's job at that point. The solenoid does 2 things. One, it engages the drive (the part I believe is bad), Two, connects the battery to the starter to spin it. It won't connect the battery until AFTER it's run it's travel to engage the drive.
I bought a permanent magnet starter that weighs 6 pounds and makes a cool Jetson kind of sound when it fires up.
