Replaced the gasket on the tailgate and/or lift gate??? You can hold a rag over the tail pipe to determine if there are any leaks. If there are no leaks it's most likely coming in around the rear tail gate or lift gate from the bellflowers.

I couldn't drive my 47 woody with the lift gate up. The fumes would make my eyes water.

We did the exhaust on a Toyota Supra. The guy swore we had a leak. Fumes in the cabin. Teated the system with no leaks. When we lifted the hatch back it was full of rust holes letting the fumes in.

You will never see a modern S/W, van or SUV with factory tail pipes all the way to the rear bumper. They will always dump out close behind the wheel to keep the fumes from entering the cabin.

I've put an *** load of tailpipes out the rear of new SUVs but we always warn them that you can't drive with the rear window down or open. The new gaskets kept the fumes out. Once the window gaskets start to decay their eyes will start to burn too.

Listen to Tommy, it's a well known fact that the aerodynamics practically ****s fumes in through the rear. My guess it's coming in through the tailgate too. It's made even worse if you roll your front windows down for "fresh" air.

the rear of the wagon is a "low pressure area"! that was the what my friends dad used to tell us why those metal air deflectors were on the back corners of his wagon. wtf! was always the look he got with a courtesy "gee thanks mr. wilson!":D:D

Well I'll be damned.I've been running my '40 Olds and exhaust has been burning my eyes and giving me a headache. My wife pitches a fit when we have to go any distance. It doesn't matter if the windows are down or not.I cut some of the seal back at the trunk near the latch to get it to close.I'll replace it and adjust the latch.

It may be just a simple re-routing exercise with the pipes to get the flow out of being stuck in the low pressure at the rear. The bell flowers may need to be shortened or lengthened or even tipped up or down.

Not very scientific but you'd be amazed at how easily a little bit of fumes get in a car and really fowl up your day.

A guy I know says: "In the 50s and 60s, you roll your car into the garage and close the door. An hour later, you're dead. In the 70s you roll your car into the garage and after 6 hours, you're dead. In the 80s you roll in and it takes all night to die. 90s, a day. 2000s you roll your car into the garage, sit all day with the radio on and just get a screaming headache."

Maybe there is a little bit of a positive to all of this garbage under my hood. Nah...

It's either coming through the back or you need new Muffler Bearings

have had the same issue with a 55 and 57 chevy hardtop--both had pipes out the back--changed them to exit up under the rear 1/4's as chevy did and no more issues-since then I have never run pipes out the back--end of problem

Yup, the exhaust exiting at the corners was done for a reason! Besides I like how it looks.

  12. My 57 longroof has the same proble - the normal angled at 45 deg pipes that Chevy fitted from the facory were replaced with pencil tips exiting at the rear bumper.

Guess what, cant open the windows or you get fumigated. When I brought it up, others thought I was nuts. I did'nt think so.

The tailpipes need to exit into the airstream out of the vacuum induced at the rear of the car.
