i am working on my 1950 chevy and i came across some strange bolts, weird bolt heads, its like an hour gl*** shape hole, maybe like a peanut? these bolts are in he engine bay, firwall>? i am trying to take them out but i dont have the right tool? anyone know what these are called, or better still, where do i get the driver bits to remove them? thanks mike
They are called Clutch-head, and they are all over the place on those Chevys. You're looking for a screwdriver set for those, and most places that sell restoration parts for those cars (or similar year trucks) carry them.
i got rid of all of mine..hate the dam things..i used the end of a pair of narrow nosed plyers to get into the hole and turned them all out..also used a bit larger square bit and punded it into the hole and turned them out..but like I said I hate em so I didnt give a rats *** about screwing them up..I just went and replaced them with a nice stainless bolt..its sweet now cause if i want them out I dont have to have some special tool..(especially helpful when your stranded on the side of the road)
Sears used to sell the clutch head drivers too, I've used the pointy end of a flat metal file before in a pinch.
Here's a set, but you might be able to find a better price. I think I paid about $20 for the set of 4 that I have. I bought them new at a swap meet. http://www.cl***icchevy.com/product...-108&mscssid=Q3P8XNVWEG0P8HLUX7JQRJ9158H3D1S0
The easiest thing to do is buy you a large set of 1/4" interchangeble bits that has allot of the different types of fasteners covered. Most all tool companies sell these now, Black decker, cobalt, crafsman etc. That way they are there when you need them.
