Are these heads any good??? I was offered them with hardened valve seats for $100 bux. casting number is 3917291 and only has accessory holes in one head??? I am sorry the tittle says 8917291.... I miss read the castings... its 3917291...
Those are 1968 350cid heads with 1.94in/ 1.5exh and 64cc combustion chambers. That choice is yours my friend. I'd run 'em
Just had a set of those done for my 327..Nothing wrong with them at all from what i know. They run great on my little mill.. As far as the hole's..not sure about that one.. Niether of mine had hole's in them.. Did the late 68 casting's start with the accessory hole's? I had a set of '70s with the 'double hump' casting and those did have hole's...can't remember what the casting number of those were though..I built that motor olmost 10 years ago and sold the car last year..
sorry like I said the post title is wrong.. its 3917291... from what I can tell they can come in 2.02 or 1.94 is this true???
That number through mor-tec's site read's as follow's. Unfortunately they don't list valve size there and i don't know off hand if they did come 2.02 3917291....67-68...302/327/350..Camel hump,no accessory holes,64cc chamber</pre> This is probably a really dumb question but i'll ask anyway. The head with the hole's, does it have the machined risers like the later model heads with holes do? The 68's i just had done have the same look the earlier one's have with no acc holes..no machined boss..I guess i'm asking do both head's have the same cast look on the ends? I know, sounds strange.. but now ya got me wondering.
Yes you are right they do come in 2.02 or 1.94. Sorry I read the wrong number. I was told that if the valves look to be almost touching the its probly 2.02 / 1.6 . I don't know if thats true or not, but it sounds good.
It is true. The 2.02 set will look as though they touch, very close. The 1.94s have a slight gap between them..but just enough to see a little casting between the valves.
I also have a book that says "no bolt holes", but I never saw a Chevy without them from '68 on, same year they enlarged the crankshaft journals. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. My book also says the 350 had the smaller valves, 302 & 327 large valve. "Chevrolet small-block V-8 ID Guide" is not the last word, by any stretch. My '70 Monte had the optional 300 horse 350 with camel humps cast with-in the raised bosses for the bolt holes, casting #3927186, listed in this book as '68-'72 302/327/350.
For 100 i'd say yes..As a usable core i'd expect to pay that.. I just paid 150 for a set of 461's that needed a complete rebuild.. But, one with bolt holes and one without still has me stumped.. The 68 head's i just had done with the same casting number had none.
