My Christmas present to my little bro is to help him lift his first truck. The problem is that we can't get the steering arm off for the new one to go on. It has 3 studs that it is bolted to the knuckle w/. The arm is bevel cut w/ inserts. We have soaked it w/ penetrating oil for weeks, worn out a BFH, tried using an oversized socket around the bushings (not sure what kind of metal-kind of soft-not br***) and strike downward w/ the BFH, and applied heat and quenched. I didn't use much heat for fear of the studs losing their temper. We just can't let our studs get soft, now can we hehe. Any ideas? The only suggestion I've had so far is pounding an oversized socket around the bushings-no luck no matter what I do. Thanks for any help. I'll check in tomorrow.
is there enough of the bushings sticking up that you could tap them sideways back and forth with a cold chisel? go easy on it though
They are split beveled inserts around the studs . They are also used on old GMC city buses , on the rear axle flanges for centering ***emblies . A few taps with a air hammer to the back of the arm would be the easiest . If you don't have a air hammer try some real sharp hits to the arm with a hammer . Sometimes the inserts will come a little loose , grab them with vise grips and spin them off . Once the inserts are out , your done .
try ask on this forum, they got all the answers you need www.ck5.com if you need new studs you´ll find it here www.offroaddesign.com
I've tried to tap them back and forth w/ a cold chisel-won't move. They are split. Tried air hammer, no luck. They are really stuck. Thanks for the input. I'll try the ck5 forum to see if they have any model specific tricks. Thanks again
if your going to replace it just cut it off! sounds like you have done a handful of things with zero results. break out the "fire wrench!"
