2001 Dodge 3500, 112,000 mi, 5.9 ***mins, 4X 4, Long Bed with NV5600 6 speed transmission. Just went out again for the 3rd time. Failures were at 82,000, 97,000 and now at 112,000. Had regular dealer service. Use it to haul a 40' gooseneck and a Case 1155E loader tipping the scales at 25,000 lbs. Parts are really hard to find. Last time I had to buy a core for $500 just to get parts for the rebuild by a heavy truck ****** shop. Problem seems to be in the 5-6 gear section with seized bearings. <OSpoke with a rebuild shop in Ohio and they have started drilling lube holes in the case and bearing shell and claim they have not had any failures since they started. Anyone have experience with this procedure??? <OI am seriously considering changing the NV5600 out for a Fuller FSO-6406A. It has a 660 HP rating with 6th at .78. It's being used in mid-size trucks with the 5.9. These ratings are close to the NV5600. The transfer case would have to be divorced. Clutch may be an issue. Would need a #2 SAE bell housing and 1-1/2" clutch or change the input shaft on the Fuller to 1-3/8th. Lots of work, but parts are readily available Anyone have experience with this type of replacement for a NV5600?<O</O
Those are junk (as you already know) So are the 5 speeds. Neither one was designed to take the torque the Dodge can dish out. Go over here http://www.fordification.com/forum/ and find user averagef250. He is sharp on these things and knows the best fix or transplant.
http://turbodieselregister.com/forums/24-valve-engine-transmission-1998-5-2002/ Here's where you need to go for info on the NV5600. Search NV5600 and you shouod get all the info you need. There are a TON of rebuilders and aftermarket products for that transmission. Its considered to be one of the best manual trans for the light duty pickup....it's a monster. You should easily be able to repair and upgrade that trans to handle what your doing with it. The NV5600 went out of production a couple of years ago, hence the rise in oem parts and availibilty....just more reason to go aftermarket.... Now, if you can get that Fuller in there, that would be a hell of a setup...Good Luck http://www.standardtransmission.com/ http://www.southbendclutch.com/dodge_catalog.html http://www.blumenthalautomatics.com
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com is another good site. Both forums should have info on who has the right parts for that ****** to last. Some of them are playing with Cryo treating. The fuller may be a good option for that much weight. I was going to upgrade my A/T in the Dodge until I started comparing prices. An Allison is way cheaper than upgrading the POS from the factory. Anyway, good luck.
UPDATE Took the plunge and actually installed the Fuller FSO-6406 in my 2001 Doge Ram. I have photos at http://www.sanco-bg.com/Conversion_NV5600.htm of the install. Works great and I won't have worry about being left standed because of a junk NV5600. Been averaging 2,000 miles a month just driving locally----psssst, and if you have a little experience, can shift without using the clutch.
