Can you fit a 16x10 Real Wheel in a 40 Ford without modifying the floor or wheelwells

Saw Wayne Scraba's article in Rod and Custom (good issue by the way) called Axle Assurance about measuring for a proper rearend. The tech car is a 40 Ford coupe and 16x10 Real Wheels are going underneath it. My question is, in order to fit these wheels, does the floor or wheelwells need to be modified, and if so, has any HAMBers done this and what does it take to do it. Thanks.

I would think it's absolutely necessary. We had a '40 coupe years ago and I remember my dad selling his 8-inch original Halibrands because they wouldn't fit in the original wells.

It is fairly easy to make a tool to figure out what will go and what will not ... :) Helps figure out backspace issues on rims also.

Randy (Deuce Roadster) that picture and the idea it implies is pure genius. Now, I'm going to go away thinking that that was your picture. PLease don't spoil the moment by telling me that was someone else's idea.

Randy is a genius.... Randy is a genius.... Randy is a genius.

On a 40 coupe we had when I was a kid, I remember having trouble getting 15x7's with large tires (245-75's?) on. Had to twist the tire in from the underside and rotate it around.

I bet the bare 16x10 wheel wouldn't even fit.

Hey, if you made that out of tool steel instead of plywood, it would carve out your tub are for you!

Meanwhile, just stick your head into the '40 wheelwell and look up... You'll wonder how the stock tire fit.

Cool! This is one of those ideas where you slap your forehead and say "why didn't I think of that?"

i just looked at the site and got confused on the spindle mount bolt on wheels with a lug bolt pattern... so if its spindle mount, where are the lugs that fit into those holes?

Hi. Nope. You can't fit them without cutting the car. In my case, I'm narrowing the frame, z'ing it, cutting out the tubs and floor and so on to make it all work. I didn't get deep into it in this article, but I made mention of it in the second paragraph of the copy (page 92). Also, the Real Wheels are very, very nice pieces. Made in the USA too.

    Take care...

  20. I'm running P235/75R15's on an 8" wide rim. I can't decrease the backspacing any more 'cause it just clears the outer fender lip under all conditions. With 2 people in the car, the inner sidewall of the tire will just barely kiss the inner wheel well. When I'm solo I don't have a problem.

So, with all that said, I'm max'd out on what I can do. I'd say 10" rims are definitely a "no go".

My coupe has 15 x 8 with 285/70 15 tires, some work on the inner fender panels for more clearance, and a little work on the outer lip as well. The combination looks great, but is really ten pounds in a five pound bag. Next tire replacement, I am going to change to 16 x 8 and 245/75 tires.
