When running solid engine mounts, make sure your transmission mount is the stock style rubberized mount. That will alleviate a lot of the stress on the mounts and it will also help eliminate vibration problems.

Spoken from experience with SBC engines mounted similar in oval track stock car racers. Oh, and the only broken blocks have been the result of heavy crash damage or catastophic engine failure.

Indeed. I should have mentioned this as well.

In fact, when we run a mid-plate, we don't even use a tailshaft mount. Never broken a ****** or a bellhousing, and that was when we were running cast iron three speeds (~145 lbs). Hell, with a Bert 2 speed, we even use the old aluminum bellhousings and no tailshaft mount (but a Bert only weighs like 40 lbs).

If you mount it rigid in too many places and your ch***is flexes any at all, you will break something. I was always taught that you could pick any two mount points and not have any trouble, but if you used three rigid mounts you'd break the ****** or the bellhousing when the ch***is flexed. Dunno if it's actually true though, 'cause we never tried it.

The very first car I had (bought used) used the side block mounts and the ****** tailshaft mount, and all the others we've done had the side block mounts and a mid-plate with the ****** just hanging out in space. Both ways worked just fine.

Some Drag cars use solid motor mts but not recomended for street use. I think it can transfer more horsepower to the wheels, if its not twisting. frame will twist with torque of the motor, trans mount would have to be rubber mounted. something has to give.

Are you planning on running a panhard bar with that rear suspension? Looks like all three links are inline - not really restricting the side load on the axle.

I kicked up the rear frame to get it low.

The rear is just mocked up. I need to finish the bottom arms and build the top one and the pan hard bar.

I like the dirty welds on the motor mounts right on top of the rusty frame.......

No need to clean the metal before you weld motor mounts, they aren't a critical stress point.

this is what really saddens me about the hamb, people bashing one another, you know, a guy is learning to build his first car and some ones gotta bash him, Lance is a great guy that is just getting into hot rods, ive been over there a few times helping on the car and giving him pointers, and hes learning and having fun, thats what its about.

    JEFF

p.s. by the way he did grind around the area where he welded, pictures arent the same as being there in person.

That's just how some folks are. The only way they can feel good about themselves is to look down their nose at someone else. It's always going to be this way, you're going to find one of them anywhere you go. Best bet is to just tell 'em to go **** themselves and get on with what you're doing.

Towaholic, by all means keep us posted on your progress. You have a good start. If there wasn't these build project to look at here on the HAMB, I would have to leave the computer and go build something myself. :)

Looking good Lance. Bet you haven't had much time the past few days with all the fresh snow. I'm sure you've been too busy pulling yahoos outta the ditch. But you gotta make $$ for the projects, right!? Call me when you're out in the shop, I'd like to swing by.

So, what makes this a rat rod? For starters, the way the rear wheel fits the arch in the body. Proportions matter. I think it's the difference between a hot rod and a ratter.

Call it what ever you want it don't hurt my feelings. I posted this for insight and ideas. And it might not be the most Traditional car you have ever SEEN. But it will be built in a traditional matter. And what I mean by that is with the help of friends. on nights and weekends. with used parts either free traded for or cheap. I wasnt around when they USE to do it so i dont know if every high school kid was loaded to go buy every speed part he ever wanted with the perfect body work and paint done all the first time before the car ever saw the road. Sorry but it didnt happen that way. They did what they could with what they had. And as far as the rusty welds my welder doesnt even think about penatration like that with out it being clean. This is also the shop were my trucks get cleaned on a regular basis (moisture=rust) and my stuff does get wet from time to time. There alot of snow outside right now. this car is not going anywere soon so let it all out i can take it.

I dont think it looks ****ty. could be reworked with diffrent mounts but you cant tell the penetration from a blown up pixilated picture.

If you must bad mouth a man's ride, you ought to save your ire for the most death-trapish of the lot.

Say for instance, these fine creations:

Those machines are the equivalent of license plate wearing meat grinders.

This man's machine is not. It may not be aesthetically perfect, but it's a damned long ways away from the above too. As long as it's safe, who gives a **** if it's not your idea of what the perfect hot rod should look like? His money, his time, his vision (regardless of whether you think it's "right" or not).

Man the A has it all map pocket, garage door opener, hat holder, trays for your favorite beverage, a seat cusion for the next game, and the bike would be cool if it didn't look like the rider was a regular at the Blue Oyster Bar.

Somehow, that guy being killed in a police shootout doesn't
seem strange to me. I read or saw a video of that bike a year
or so ago, seems he was the only person who could ride it. One of the people who bought it tried to ride and got hurt.

yeah, and he has a wide white on the front and a narrow whitewall on the back and the red primer on the grill doesn't match the red primer on the shell. and just look at the floor its wide open and he doesn't even have a windshield in it. And I bet its loud to I don't see any mufflers. and its his first hot rod build and he's still working on it. Ohhh Never mind!!Have fun Kid thats what its about or grind the welds and make it a trailer Queen

I have seen alot of pieces of **** look like the floor in that first picture above the crazy motorcycle. That car is probably one of the NEW types of trailer queens. Because there is no way anyone would drive something like that ALL the time or even some of the time.

Your car looks fine and the welds are probably fine to especially if that tube runs down into the frame rail like your friend said it does. Hagan is probably just one of the many traditional police who have come along in the past few years to bash on peoples rides.

Who's to say whats traditional and whats not anyway. There is different kinds of tradition and different opinions on what is and isn't traditional so who give a **** this is today NOT 1952 so who gives a rats *** he's building his car his way with what he has available I've seen alot more scaryier **** than that on here hell I've made worse looking welds than that in the past that have held better than some of the nice pretty ones that I've made for certain parts of my cars. You can't tell by one ****py picture how strong a weld is without being there in person to inspect it.

Plus what I see around the weld the rusty looking stuff on the edges of the weld is common when your heating steel. I work with steel all day long everyday welding and cutting different types of steel and the oxidation that is probably what he's seeing is very common.

Plus who cares its his car not yours.
