Just picked up a block with heads. The block casting is C9OE-6015-C which I believe is a 351 block but the heads say 302 on them with the CF symbol(cleveland foundry?) on them and the only castings I can find is OF11 on the left head and OF9 on the right. So tell me what did I pick up?
CF does mean Cleveland Foundry, but doesn't mean it's a Cleveland. How many valve cover bolts per head? 6 = Windsor 8 = Cleveland/Modified The C9 digits in your casting number indicates a 1969 part number, but may be newer in actual production. 302 heads will bolt onto a 351W and vice-versa. Got any pics? That would make it easier.
Ok just looked theres 6 bolts on the cover. Has a 2 barrel manifold and the rockers look to be adjustable they are mounted to a stud with a nut on top of the rocker. The engine doesn't look like its ever been apart. Just wondering did the factory put 302 heads on 351's? Or is this someone put together. I've looked at all my info and can find nothing on the head castings 0F11 & 0F09. Would they put cleveland 302 heads (the heads have CF stamped in them) on a 351w and for what reason. Sorry for all the questions but hey I don't ask I'll never know!
How wide is the intake manifold? (351 Windsors have a taller deck height than 221,255,260,289 and 302 Windsor blocks, hence the wider intake.) With experience, you can tell just by looking. I'm thinking you have a late 60s/early 70s 302...possibly a 351W of the same vintage. I can measure a 302 intake when I get home, but I don't know the measurements off the top of my head.
Your heads say 302 on them, they are 302 Heads..There isnt a 302 Cleveland just 351, and those 400's..which are based on the 351C...The width of a 302 Manifold is 9 inches, the 351W is bigger. If you were to pull off the intake it should also say 302 or 351 in the lifter valley. Most of the time but not always...Either way, a 69 block and heads are good, better compression, more HP, than the 74 and later ones.... Nothing on the 351W or 302 is interchangeable with the Cleveland...
You most likely have '69 351W block. 302 heads interchange, so their presence isn't surprising given the 35 years the block was kicking around before you got your hands on it. As for telling the difference between a 289/302 and a 351W, the easiest way is to look for the upper area of the water pump mounting pad, near the upper water pump bolt holes. If the pad for the waterpump is flush at the point where the head meets the block, it's a 289 or 302. If there's about 1.5" in-between the water pump mounting pad and the head, it's a 351W (because of the taller deck height).
