Wayyyy back when I was a young fella automatic transmissions had rear pumps. I actually remember push starting my 55 chev with an automatic. So I think this is where the neutral thing in automatics got its start. By the way this is a WAG on my part.
naw...........its so you can rev up the motor and impress all your friends with the awesome sound of power......and then light your flame throwers!
Yeah, but you can't push-start them when they are in neutral, so that blows that theory/WAG, eh? My old Chrysler doesn't have PARK, so I need neutral in order to start the car.
ever heard of Sigmund Freud? maybe he could've explained why so many guys feel the need to waggle a stick constantly
it's a safety feature. if the car dies you can put it in neutral and restart it. without that you'd have to stop (in traffic) and put in park to restart.
What he said. Besides, early Hydramatics didn't have "PARK" (You put them in reverse to sorta lock the trans.)
- Two-foot stopping on ice. (left foot brakes, right foot tries to keep the engine running.) - Trying to re-start a half-cold/half warm engine while coasting, - Pushing your now-flooded car out of an intersection - Flat-towing to a parking lot to wait until the plugs dry out. Basicly.... Winter.
