...if you have the March 1970 issue of Rod & Custom, there's an article about just what you are trying to do. I'm about ready to do the same conversion on a 37 Chevy beam axle.
...if you don't have that issue, I could fax/send it to you.
    Good luck with your Chevy.

...PS, 54 Chevy truck axles have the most drop from the factory.

i have a 37 chevy front axle drum to drum with hydraulic brakes. i know you are trying to get rid of the 6 lug, but i also have 6 16" rims that are pretty cool looking. i think the rims are 37 only. im even in the same state. i bought it for my es*** but its not going to work for me as planned. it has quite a bit less drop than my stock axle, and im not going for the g***er look. i cant swap the spindles onto my axle. so i basically cant use it. let me know if interested.

The rear from that Camaro is going to be too wide. A rear from a S-10 will be closer to what you need. 4wd is 60" overall and 2wd is narrower, but I am not sure of the dimension. They all use the 7.5 ring gear so strength(or lack of it) will be the same.

actaully its funny you mention it. i origionally thought the same thing. a blazer rear is 59 and an s10 2wd is 54 surface to surface. the camaro rear is 64 and still to narrow with a 4 inch back space wheel. my car is ruffly 58 inches wide and i am dropping it to the rockers hit the ground. so i am going to need some reverse offsets. in the rear. lol its outta hand really
