Hello all. I have been stocking around for a while. I finally got a look at the 29 Chevy Fire Truck. Its an open cab too. So there is a bench seat and the cowl in that mess. The cowl/fire-wall looked good. It has been sitting there for over 7 years and before that it was sitting in the wood beside my inlaws house. Now the mother-inlaw will give me the truck and help fund the build BUT it has to still "Look like a truck". Its against my wishes. This is my wife's and my truck. It is NOT going to be a "FIRE TRUCK". We are planning stake bed on it, but would like other ideas. I said about a Suburan style, Bus, or somthing along that lines. We would like some fresh new ideas. Tell me what you think. Heres come pics:
Here's what I would do: '29-'32 Chevy p***enger car frame, keep the parallel leaf springs, MAS dropped axle w/'51-'52 Chevy (car) spindles and drum brakes, late 235/261 backed w/a T-5, artillery wheels, '55-'57 Chevy rear end, bed, tailgate and rear fenders from a '30-'32 Chevy pickup.
They might be bigger pics. they work for me. Sorry. How about this: http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1348.jpg http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1347.jpg http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1346.jpg http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1344.jpg http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1349.jpg http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o215/s_kline76/100_1350.jpg
I know everyone is getting tired of seeing my POS but here is my 32 chevy. Started life as a flatbed oil field truck. The hardest part will be pieceing it all back together. the wood is obviously gone in yours. Do something with it as there arent that many early chevys out there. I thinks its the fear of replacing the wood. I replaced the wood in mine with 1x1 box tubing. Early chevys are cheap and make fine hot rods.. Keep it.... also if you want to get rid of that fuel tank, Let me know....
TxRat: Thats a great POS! That is what I would love to have. Wife & Inlaw don't like jalopies, BUT I'm not going down with out a HUGE fight. There are 2 gas tanks there. Sorry nothing for sale yet untill I know what I need or want. There are parts from another 29 truck in that pile. If you look there is another pair of front fenders in the pile, 4 headlights, 2 engine covers, 2 gas tanks, the radi. is in there too. I'm afraid its going to sit way to high to go out and have "fun" in it. I just don't want to putts down the road. I want a chopped/channeled fun rust bucket! I can't see cornering in an open cab "rig". Slow isn't my speed!! How can I get that to sit lower? Those are some BIG tires. The frame is solid from what I could see. I'm thinking a 4-6 year build. I'm poor!! I said about the Beverly Hillbilly Truck to the inlaw. Just trying to pull ideas.
probably gonna have to ditch the wheels tires frame etc etc if ya want it to sit like the other pic maybe start on a new model a frame that is zed front and rear maybe a drop axle small wheels etc etc etc
im builing a 29 chevy pick up2 if u want me to do sume skechs or just have sum qustions PM me nice blc headlight by the way Davis
This may sound crazy, but if your mother in law is GIVING it to you under the condition that you keep it somewhat true to form, and your wife feels the same way, why not honor their wishes (and your promise) and just make a decent, servicable stake-bed truck out of it. Not everything old should necessarily be made into a hot rod, and there are still tons of beater model A's out there just waiting to be hacked up and rodded out (that can be picked up cheap if you look hard enough), AND you won't piss off two women who could make your life a living hell. Just a thought.
Repoguy: That was my though too. But if there was a way to kill to bird here why not. But I can't see my rod at that height and speed. I do have to please the ladies. I live with one!! LOL.... I DO get to pick the drive train! It HAS to fit under the covers (wife's demand).
You know, old stake-beds are damned cool in their own rite. I'd say do the exterior in a traditional farm-truck kind of way, but with a few little hot rod details (a little pin-striping here and there, maybe red wheels or something) and save the *wow* factor for under the hood. Maybe an inline 292 or something with a bunch of killer vintage speed stuff, dual carbs on a clifford intake, finned valve cover, that sort of thing. Give it a little flavor without changing what it is. This is a ford I found, but you get the idea:
Hey do us a favor. When you get the time take all the pieces and put them behind the truck to see whatcha have to work with. The grille looks good. Cowls rusted off?? I can't tell. Then take some pictures. 32 chevy that i have been peicing together http://www.hotrodders.com/journal_photos/00047342/11865463791.jpg For godsake were all peiceing together vintage chevy.I'm a grand deep not bad ,but hey whens the last time you saw a vintage chevy anyways.
The cowl was unbolted and is laying down under the engine cover up front, it still have the coil on it. I don't have a place to take it too. All the parts look in good shape. The rear fenders are there and look good too.
i have to agree with repoguy stake trucks are cool with a few hot rod accents , good luck on your project..
i just bought a 29 1 ton for the cab and grill the moter and trany are good but the carb needs rebuilt if your looking for what it came with.
