Chance for a free '55 Ford V-8 rear. Is this a 8" or 9"? Has one hump where the ring gear is and no dimples??

Ford didn't start using the 9" until '57 and the 8" started in the early/mid '60s.
Don't know anything about the earlier rear ends.

Not worth keeping unless you want to keep a stock drive train. Step up to the 60s (Late 50s for the 9 inch) and later to get the gears and strength you need, be it an 8 or 9 inch.

Yup the stock rearend is ****. especially witha bigger drivetrain. i hear the 57 9" are right on the money as far as size. i just had a later 9" cut down to fit.

The stock 55 rear is OK as long as you don't pound on it with a ton of HP. It is the same design as the nine inch, just smaller, and much lighter.
