Over the top never happen it would have to be a Miller. Or maybe a Liberty. Sorry, got a few extra cylinders there.
I saw an air cooled Hispo V8 in a museum when I was a kid that almost made me wet myself. Never forgot how cool that engine was.
In reality I cut my teeth on 50s olds engines and always had a soft spot for those but any 427 Ford would turn my crank just fine.

Here's my 392. The fact of which is the best doesn't matter. Take pride in building a hot rod. From older to bigger they are all cool. Just as long as you don't stick all that billet shit and chrome it to hell.

I have to admit, I like the early hemis having one myself (desoto). Been a chevy guy many years but am kinda tired of em. Early olds like that pic posted with multiple carb is as good as it gets no doubt. One engine I thought I would like to build one day (what I would put it in I have no idea) is a 1954 Packard straight eight (I know, I'm wierd). Many came factory stock with aluminum head, 4bbl carb and 356 cubic inches. Imagine bump the compression slightly, bore it out and maybe multiple 1 bbls with a chrome header of some sort. Now that could be kind of cool too.

The 427 SOHC (single overhead camshaft) was the "cammer"
The 429 with funky valve covers was simply the Boss 429

    Both great looking engines...

A pumped up 426 Hemi. Way more than what's needed on the street, but damn! How can you not love this thing?

In an open bay Hot Rod I want one of these Studebaker or Nash V8 or maybe a Hudson, Packard, or anything different from a run of the mill V8.
