i need help with this. im totally stumped. for some reason, my 170 is cutting out while driving. it only happens in 2nd gear mid throttle at mid rpms. it doesnt happen if im idling and rev it or in 1st or 3rd while driving. i have a freshly rebuilt carb. new cap rotor and wires. rebuilt the motor a few thousand miles ago. i cant imagine it being the fuel filter cuz it shouldnt be cutting out at that one spot... help please
Check your fuel pump or possibly a flat spot in the accelerator pump on your new carb. And check out that filter, ya never know.
I'm ***uming a few things, so let me see if I'm right. I ***ume you have a stock 170, original 1 bbl carb, original distributor. If so, you have the load-o-matic ign system and what you are experiencing may be as simple as a faulty advance diaphragm on the distributor. You DO have the vacuum line still attached between the top of the carb and distributor, right? I would check the diaphragm, then put a couple more degrees advance in it and try it out.

sorry the carb is a weber 2v. i believe its the kind from the mid 70's mustang 6cyls. the vac. adv. is hooked up. it is the original distributor though. it has been running good since i rebuilt it a few thousand miles ago and just started acting like this yesterday.
This sounds like a cl***ic case of the condensor heading south! You didnt mention you fitted a new one. With a bad condensor the engine will start fine, idle OK and rev in neutral just great . But under load at medium throttle in second like you suggest is a sure fire effect of a dud condensor. I had a friend with a straight 6, changed plugs, leads, rebuilt carby and finally came over to see me after it went from bad to worse in a week of driving. $3.00 Condensor from K-Mart fixed it.
When you know for sure, please post. My '41 Poncho flathead 6 239c.i. does that in first and second. Third gear, no problem. _______________________ WINGED AVENGER I can fix cars and people, I can't fix stupid.
You might also want to check/replace the coil. My '59 Stude was doing the same thing recently, and a new coil fixed it. The '52 Stude was doing the same thing, and a coil fixed it too. Good luck.
i will try one thing at a time and see what happens then let you all know. thanks to all of you for your help!
well, it stopped having the problem out of nowhere. i changed the coil anyway. still haven't had the problem. dont know what it was exactly or if the coil fixed it but its been running good again...
