    Record setting diesel dragster.

I had no idea about these things, and this was at our local track just a couple of months ago.

    Potentially a dumb question-- 1/8th or 1/4?

I love it, though -- I love typically "unconventional" car-related things made out of rather utilitarian things -- pickups & wagons turned into hot rods, diesel used in race cars, etc...

(Granted, this particular diesel engine was probably built specifically for this purpose -- diesel is, in the eyes of most, a rather utilitarian thing)

My 12.0-second GTO runs the 1/8 in the 7.60s, so you can bet that digger is running 7s in the 1/4.;)

If you want to make a hot rod nowadays out of a late model vehicle, you should take a serious look at building a diesel. Duramax's, Cummins and Fords can now all be built to around 7-800 HP with 12-1400 ft. lbs. of torque, using parts you can order right off the shelf. No gas engine even comes close to what you can build for the price, and the gas engines never get there on the torque figures.

Several years ago I went to Bandimere raceway in Colorado to cover a race, and also went to one of the Dr. Performance franchises to get into on their turbo-diesel stuff. The guys at Bandimere didn't know I was going to the diesel place, but while talking, they told me about a local guy who had a Dodge extended cab, 4WD turbo diesel dually "farm truck" that routinely kicked the ass of the late-model Z28 Camaros they had. They said the guy had to put it in 4wd to drag race, because if he didn't it would blow off the dual rear tires on the starting line. They said the truck ran 13s...turned out it was the guy I was going to see. The guys at Bandimer had NO reason to tell me about a diesel truck kicking their hot rods' asses--they certainly didn't look good getting trailered by a farm truck.

Some tricks with the fuel pump, the computer and a couple other things, and that daily-driven ranch work truck ran 13s, and pulled down better mileage.

I dont know why people stereo type drag cars of having to be V/8 Chevy running on gas .A piston is a piston ,a rod is a rod ,a block is a block and so on.If you have the money to experiment and the know how you can make flathead 6 haul ass...
