looking to chop the top off my 53 chevy sedan.i need some in progress pictures or tech articles for refference. i would like step by step but anything will help. i am chopping it 41/2 inches.i like the subtle look..Thanks
I did a post a while ago, pretty much step by step with pics, but it was never saved in the tech section for some reason, and all the pics i have are not on this computer.. Not sure if anyone bothered saving it. I should have, but or course i didn't... If someone did, maybe they could send it to you or post it.. Good luck with the chop.. Tony
check out sawzalls fotki site...he chopped a 53 this past winter and now is working on placing a 350-350 in it. http://public.fotki.com/sawzallshop tok
Thanks very nice work... only one little problem i have the wrap a round rear window...but that is a great start..Thanks
Go back a year or so, look up "Unfinished Nationals" we chopped one in a weekend...........lots of pics............OLDBEET
Just because im curious.... are there any tech's on chopping, and *keeping* the wrap around window? some of us like the moonglow flow B)
Squigy.... here are the links i mentioned on that other board. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5897 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48907 http://photobucket.com/albums/v224/daddyo54/?start=80 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18480 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9135
Daddyo54, if i remember correctly, had a sweet 54 he chopped and left the stock backlite in. His car is probably the best looking one with the stock gl*** i've seen. He had posted some pics of the way he did it a while ago.. Nice job i must say.. I myself LOVE Moonglow, probably one of the nicest customs of that body style in my eye's. I could very well be mistaken when i say this, but i thought the rear window on Moonglow was lexan or plexi and not the stock gl***.. Anyone know for sure? Although still not easy, if you used lexan as the rear window you could still maintain the stock shape, yet chop that too to keep the flow of the roof the way it should be.. Much like JJ's car. That has a lexan back window in it, and still has the wrap around look and crown to the roof as a stocker.
Herre are step by step pictures.... but the font is in chinese i think.... http://www.calcl***ics.us/calcl***ics.chopped54.htm
You have to find a stock back window that is not 'tempered' so you will be able to cut it down....They are outthere,,but from what i understand not easy to come by.....I'm currently working out a deal with someone that supposely has some....I will find out more and let you know........
i have a 54 chopped with the stock rear window in it still, just recess the rear window into the truck and build a cover for it, and it will not leak if you use a gl*** guy that knows his *** from a hole in the wall. i will try to get pics, i had them all on file on the last computer but hard drive crashed and i'm on my new one. but i will go down to storage and try to get some of it.
http://www.cadvision.com/blanchas/54pontiac/ Be sure to go to progress to see chop details. He did run earlier rear window, though.
yeah, moonglow's rear window was plexi.duane and his bro burned their hands fitting it to the car after they heated it in their mom's oven!i've got the article that says that stuff on my photobucket site (just go to photobucket.com and look for hotrod54chevy..that's me) i also dont think that the usual extra strip of steel was added between the trunk and rear gl*** like most books say to add...i think they just made a greater slant to the plexi from the stock location...but that's just my opinion..hopefully i can pull of that great look on my car when i chop it creepy
I think they just usually dont look right with the wraparound gl***... Ive seen a couple with plexi or lexan or whatever that look a bit better for some reason. Its something about how the stock window climbs too high into the roof when they are laid down... just my .02
OK,now when the window is laid down what do you do with the belt line.how does that get sealed to the window?? i have read about a pocket for the corners but no has pics of someone doing one... also,if i went the other way with a different widow all together what window should be used???
i put 1/8 lexan in this one.. it was pretty easy that way and i love the look , just like the MOONGLOW
the blue chopped with rally wheels, what is the side trim from??? real nice look thanks for any info. cliff
