I am trying to do a little research on flat black paint or a saint black finish. Has anyone used Hot Rod Flatz paint? Good? Bad? Other suggestions?
ArtGeco used some on his truck and said it was very thin with out reducer. I want to know more info to because i want to use the daytona blue pural on my caddy.
I have seen several other posting for Dupont Hot Rod Black, DP 90 I believe and John Deer Blitz Black. I know to each his own, but hey, why not ask others on their experiences...
Use the search ****on. There are several in depth threads and discussions about hot rod flatz. But to give you a simple answer, there have been mixed results. Some have had success and a lot have said it's ****.
this thread has got some useful information....good luck... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=229388
I wouldn't say it's ****, just wouldn't suggest it for a novice painter. Especially black, you can do that job for 1/3 the cost of what HRF's is gonna charge Ya. ****, a $60 can of black sealer primer gives a nice satin finish and is the easiest thing to shoot.
John Deere or International Harvester both have a good flat black that isn't spendy and holds up well. I've used the IH paint and even their spray bomb stuff is good paint. It'll hold up to a dairy worker with a pressure washer in his hands quite well.
I'm probably going to do my car in black and have done alot of looking at the various offerings for flat/satin black: Kirker hotrod black (single stage) SEM Hotrod black (single stage) SEM Trim black(Enamel??) Hotrod Flatz (simgle stage) Supposedly PPG Omni with flattener Sikkens Ralley black (single stage) Dupont Hot Hues (single stage) John Deer Blitz black. (Implement paint) Or if you want to go the BC/CC route PPG flex-n-flat clear coat can be used. I've read mixed reviews on Flatz, but have heard only good things about Kirker and SEM trim black and have not heard any feedback on SEM Hot Rod black. Todd
Thanks A LOT everyone. This gives me some good info. and additional research info. And thanks for the pics too, that always helps. The trucks look awesome HotRodPrimer and SilentKilla!
Whatever you decide to use , just make sure it has built in UV protection if you will be driving it alot or you'll have a chalky grey vehicle shortly !I use PPG base 9700 black with PPG clear and flattening agent . PPG suppliers can mix the clear for a variety of finish differences from ultra flat to semi gloss or anything in between . I like the "eggshell" finish myself with the black rod look plus the clear has the UV protection you will need and it's EASILY touched up is the best part !
