1937 and later..... Ford hubs and spindles, what will work togeather?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Powerplant, Dec 30, 2007.

  1. I did some searching and didn't find a answer to this exact question.

I have 12" 1940 backing plates on 1937-41 Ford spindles. I am in need of hubs and would like to go after the Buick aluminum drums. Someone already told me that I should look for 1940-41 drums and I would be set. I have been scouring egay and local places and it's either $$$$$$$$ or nothing. I have found some 46-48 hubs that seam to be cheaper than the 1940-41 hubs. What are my options? I here the term F1 brakes thrown around... what years are they?

Please help as I have been considering just selling my loaded backing plates and (gasp) buying a $200 disc brake kit from speedway. (I see someone bidding on loaded backing plates on egay at $182 right now....jeeesh.... that would about pay for a disc brake setup). Someone please restrain me, if I can get focused on what parts I need I may forget the disc idea.

If you are going to use the Buick brake drums ,you will need the 47-48 style hub. They can be identified easily as the wheel bolts to the hub flange face and the brake drum seats on the back side of the hub flange. With 1940-46 hubs, the brake drum seats over the hub so it appears that the wheel bolts directly to the brake drum. Used hubs should go between $25 to $75.00 + depending on how nice and clean they are and how good the drums are. The price of hubs is determined by two groups , the guys that want them for Buick's and the original 47-48 guys.

  3. for the buick brake drums , the best hub to use is `47 to `48 Ford front hubs. they need some simple machining to fit the 12" buick drums. earlier hubs...like`40's...can be used , but require more machining . the buick drums need some machining too

f-1 brakes are from 1948 to 1952....F-100 are from 1953 to 1956. both are basically the same and adapt real easy. they are 11" and self energizing

there are threads in the TECH section on doing both brake swaps.....check them out

i'm not a big fan of disc brakes , but it's your choice

i can do the machining on the ford hubs and buick drums for you

Thanks for the info and the offer.

I have access to a large lathe and could do the machining myself.

  5. I thought I was supposed to use the hubs that stayed on the inside of the drum?

These 47-48 hubs are a direct fit to my 37 spindles?

  7. use the hubs that **** described , they are the best to use

yes , those hubs will go right on your `37 spindles

    what are you building? pictures?

  8. If you're gonna' run Buick drums, get what **** told ya' to get, end of questions, period .

The later hubs will bolt right on your '37 spindles. If they don't fit, then ya' don't have '37 spindles.

If you're not gonna' run Buick drums, then any style '40-'48 hub and drum ***embly will work.

If you're gonna' run Buicks, look for a pair of later ***emblies with worn out junk brake drums. You'll save some $dough$.

  9. 1935 International truck....

A pic of when I brought it home, one of with some rust repair and the other of the chop I am in the middle of.

I am working on gathering parts so I can begin my ch***is.

Do I remember right that you could run Ford spindle and Buick drum together... with Buick hub and bearings.
Heard that there is needed ring around spindle, that makes spindle more thick, so it meets Buick bearing. Someone tried this?

  12. i haven't done that , but it has been done by guys on here...in fact, i think someone here makes the stuff to do it

maybe a search would bring up something

Hey yeah, those adapters are just what I remembered!
    I'll be using them!

When I bought those Buick drums for my '31 few years ago, they came with hubs and also with bearings! And now I gotta brag; for dirt cheap!
    Thank you Swedish people...

At***udor,,are you referring to the bearing adapters that 29RAT mentions on his 1/31/06 post? Did you use the Buick backing plates and what mods did you have to do to the plates? Which Ford spindles did you use? I have the 59 Buick drums,w/hubs and backing plates but have the earlier spindles (32 i think) as they are square back. Do you HAVE to use the 37 and later spindles for this to work? Thanks desert joe

Does anyone know how to get ahold of 29rat? I placed an ad in the "wanted" section for a pair of these adapters and got no response other than someone else who would like a set. I emailed 29rat at the address in his profile and it came back undeliverable. It doesn't appear he has posted on the board lately. I would really like to get a set of these adapters if anyone has a set they didn't use. Tom...
