OLD Drag Cars (but NOT in motion) Photo Thread... Your 'In Motion' photo thread got me here and to join. I found some of the old photos I took when I use to race @ Aquasco Drag Strip in Maryland way back in the 60's. Thought you guys might like to see them, and if anyone has any further info/corrections on these cars (owner of one- saw it run there- cl*** etc?) I would love to hear from you. The years have lost most of the information from my brain, but I did write on the back of some: "SMOKERRUDA" June '67: Wasn't this Paul Goldsmith? I can't make out the cl*** on the side window: S/?? Got to love that extreme set back & those injectors on that HEMI: Rice-Holman Ford Mustang- The name looks like Al(Batman)Jardine or something like that: "The Mover II" A/A with 427 Chevy 2X4's went 10.08ET @ 160MPH the day I took this photo: "The Quarter Horse II" dragster: A LOT of drag vehicles used that name over the years! And here is one that is NOT from Aquasco, but is such a unique drag vehicle I had to post it. It is the multi engine dragster of Noel-Black. Check that front engine placement!! What a handful THAT must have been to drive with all 4 wheels ablaze:
Neat photos. Here's a feature on Aquasco with pictures of what it looks like today: www.atomicpinup.com/Aquasco_Speedway.html
Oh Lee, I almost cried when I saw those recent photos of what's left of Aquasco! As it stated in the info, it was such an importnat strip in the 60-70's. I remeber watching Malcom race his stretched Corvette and wishing I had the guts to cut mine up and do the same...I guess I did later in life, but not in the same direction as he did. I can't thank you enough for the link to the site. I'll be contacting that site for sure with some of my stuff I have from the late 60's @ Aquasco. Again, thank you. Glenn
Glenn....actually, Atomic Pin-Up is my site. Feel free to contact me at lee@atomicpinup.com. I'd really be interested in any photos or material you have from that era. -Lee
probably leaves it off for the burn-out and fires it up for the actual race...at least that's what I'm thinking...
I posted some pics that a friend of mine gave me. They are from Aquasco and Old Dominion. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228006
Dizzamn man ! those are awesome photos! thanks tons for sharing them. that cuda does look wicked indeed
Mr Blue...any more pics. My father probably ran there back then. He was part of the Bates and House racing team. They started with a 55 Chevy post car called the Frito Bandito then had a 57 Chevy wagon called Justice. The last car was a 58 Vette panel painted with spider webbing. All of the cars were blue. The twin engined car was actually built for the salt flats and was simply running at the drags for check out purposes. Roo
Yes, it was finally bodied as a streamliner. The bump over the engine in the front got the car nicknamed with "rhino". The car didn't handle well, and soon crashed.
Sorry guys, but like it says, "Lost Photos". So far these were the only ones that I found of various 'other' cars (other than of my 1966 Vette, "Love Is Blue") after my divorce from the 1st wife back in early 80's. Lost more than photos on that one! Here is a photo I took myself & posted in another thread elsewhere of the Hurst Hemi Under Gl*** doing one of his 'wild' return road wheelstands with all 4 wheels in the air @ Aquasco or Capitol Raceway in Maryland ( I think). Wild Bill was crazy like that and the tracks were not so strict on rules back then. Thanks for the added info on the "Rhino" twin engine vehicle. Very interesting, indeed! Glenn
Yes, I know - the driver died. I found some photos of the car on the salt, but will not post them until I find out more.
Thanks, not a lot of those type photos around, I'm sure. Usually the front is up and being photographed! Glenn
That out front engine on the dual rig is way interesting. Hang on Sloopy! And notice the Hemi Cuda under gl*** wheelstand is on the return road!! ~sololobo~
