I'm sorry for the O/T post. I don't make a habit of this.

I'm losing my job after 13 years at GE. They're closing our plant.

I have an option for preferential hire at another GE plant, but they don't exactly give you details of locations that are hiring, or anything else for that matter.

If you, or someone close to you, work at a GE plant, please PM me.

I'd like to stay in Ohio, or in Indiana, or maybe KY...I don't know. Things are getting crazy for me.

Thanks, I appreciate it. And sorry again for the O/T post.

  2. Are you the McDonald near Youngstown or Zanesville. If you live near Youngstown try talking to them about Erie, PA that is relatively close that you won't have to move.

Erie, PA, that is where they build the big locomotives.

I'm an ex-GE guy (plant closed). .....rumor at the time was that "preferential hire" was wishful thinking/smoke up your *** and that there was no way in hell that anybody from Memphis Lamp Plant would be allowed to work in another GE plant.

I took my severance package and moved on.

  4. ge has a jet engine plant in madisonville ky. but i don't know anything about it. they also have a chemical plant in mount vernon in. same deal.

I hear ya, but there are people at our plant who came from other GE plants through pref. hiring.
And we've been told we can go to Erie to that Train plant, but I just don't know for sure.

I'm just looking to see if there's anyone who may have knowledge of other GE plants.

    I appreciate it.
    Thanks

i can't really help you except to say i am really sorry about the plant closing, seems to be more and more every day of this same thing. Once again, sorry about your luck

  7. I worked for GE SUpply until last year when we where bought out by REXEL out of France. We are now Gexpro and luckily none of us lost our jobs. There is a GE Plastics plant In Washington, WV which is right across the river from Belpre, OH. You might look into that. The best of luck to you.

I really appreciate everyone who's replied here, and PM'd me.

Mainly my, and my co-workers, problem is, GE will not give us details on any plant.

So, I have no way to get details on any of these plants, unless someone has inside information.

I have 10 choices to list where I'd be willing to go. If I don't have firsthand info, and I list a plant, I'm clueless going in.

I may end up listing a plant that has tons of ELE jobs, which means entry level employee. Could be $7. an hour.

I'm not knocking any lower wage scale plants, but I've been in skilled trades for the past 10 1/2 years. And it doesn't make any sense for me to uproot my wife and kids for that.
I can do that around here.

Again, I greatly appreciate everyone who's answered my call.

    Thank you....

Sorry to hear the news. But having been with them for over 30 years, it's all too common. I was lucky and got Nafta'ed, and got the early out package. But they do place some people in other locations. Hang in there, and keep bugging them.
    Good Luck!

Anybody with a wife and kids is a FOOL to relocate for a timeclock job. Just my honest opinion.

Stick in there, you'll land on your feet.

I worked for Generous Electric :D:D ( I hope you sense the extreme sarcasm there) for 5 years total. I was really turned off on the way they treat people and also on the way they force people to do what I considered borderline unethical behavior. All in the name of meeting some corporate goal for money/delivery/cost/whatever. The problem is that people would do things to keep their job, that they would not do otherwise. Let's just say I will never buy anything GE. Not appliances or anything I can control. I certainly would not be buying a medical MRI machine. However, this is about you continuing employment and not my bad at***ude about Generous Electric.

I worked at GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati (specifically Evendale, OH) and that is where you might have best chance for skilled trades. Although the aircraft engine business can be very cyclic and dependent on aircraft sales. It is a very union shop, not sure if you are a union employee now, but you would be. Unless you are salary.

Also worked at GE Appliances in Louisville, KY. I would not recommend that as it is pure ***y line work and all GE is trying to do is shut down and move the ***y to Mexico. So that would be jumping from one shutdown to another potential.

Feel free to PM me if you want more info. Terry

Tim, if thats how GE treats their people, and I know this would be hard to do, but I'd have to say to hell with them, cut your loses and move on brother.

You know about the railroad thing. If I can help you and your family in ANY way, let me know.

I would say that would be your best bet would be GE, Cincy (evandale). It's only an hour or less from my house (You know where that is) and if you landed there, you could stay with the the in-laws till you moved closer....
What exactly is skilled trades?? We have jobs here at the prop shop..

Grumpy, the engine testing plant is located near Peebles, OH. not too far from me. That's about 60 miles east of Cincy. Don't know much about the plant just know where it is. I'll see if I can find someone that works there and get some info for you.

Get with someone in administration. There is a website, usually unknown to most plant workers where GE lists all internal openings. HR should be able to give you the information, if not, go to your manager. I know it's available, I saw it when I was laid off....best thing to happen to me was getting away from GE...they **** the life out of a person.

Can you do a google search for GE facilities and do some research on what they do, then use the Contacts section to get in touch with the Human Research group.

I work in the GE Healthcare division. No experience with a plant job.......just managerial experience. It's a good place to work---at least in the healthcare division. All employees are required to sign a do***ent that declares them to report unethical behaviour. I have never witnessed any in my line of work. Sorry to hear about your experiences Terry.
Good luck with your hunt Grumpy.

sorry to hear that Grump. ****s big time. same kinda **** goin on at Generous Motors. i've worked in 5 plants in less than 10 years. it's getting worse and worse too. i don't much care for the way the corporation treats people (and neither does anyone else i've talked to INCLUDING my bosses) but i guess that is just big business for you. i'm VERY seriously concidering getting out. it would mean a pretty good cut in pay but i would be free to do something creative and something i enjoy. you only get one life after all and Gm is ****ing th elife right out of me. has been the whole time i've been there. i'm just not [mentaly] cut out for ***embly line work. your situation is different though. i am single and only have one child who does NOT live with me.
my dad had to give up his skilled trade job and go back into production just to keep his GM job. that seems to be the world today. i don't like it but i don't know what i can do about it either. now they are trying to instal a 2 tier wage scale with what they call "non-core" jobs paying the lower wage. they are playing ALL kinds of games to get seniority people to retire or otherwise leave so that they can eventualy get EVERYONE to work for the lower wage. the more seniority people that leave the weaker the already powerless union gets. don't even get me started on the UAW ...

    good luck to you Grump.

Wow. Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to reply here, and in PMs.

As for what I do. I felt it best to explain here so everyone can see at once.

I work in the lighting division. We build the large commercial lightbulbs that are used in Stadiums, street lites, sodium vapor, etc. Any large bulb that can't be bought at Walmart.

Our plant is 110 years old. And we use post-war equipment to keep it running.

I've spent the past 7 or so years cl***ified as a Machinist. But, I couldn't go into a modern machine shop or job shop and work.
Our lathes and milles are all post-war surplus. Honest. The newest pc. we use is from the 50's.

I'm more of a Jack of all trades, master of none......

I spent 3 years in maintance taking care of .....everything. Bucket elevators, conveyers, lehr ovens with 6' wide S.S. belts, belt shafts, bearing and pillow block replacement.....Just about everything related to keeping production running.

The past 7 years as a "Machinist", We do run lathes and milles, but we don't make the parts. We just weld keyways shut, and re-mill them out, hog out and make br*** bushings. Rebuild gearboxes. Basicly anything to keep our old junk running.
Even as a Machinist, we're more mechanics. Anything to keep the production running.

When the plant is down for a holiday, we work.
When production goes down at 3am with a breakdown, they call us.
When production is running, and it's 300 degree's next to the machine, we're there getting burnt up working on it, to keep it from going down.

I work 6 days a week, dayturn. I'm on call all other hours I'm not there. Just to keep production running.

That's it in a nut-shell. There's 5 guys that do anything and everything to repair, rebuild, replace whatever is needed to keep the place going.
There used to be 9 of us doing it:mad:

Anyway, I'm starting to be pissed off. I guess it's the way of the world these days.

    Thanks again to everyone.

I've been in the GE lighting plant in Circleville, OH. I used to work for Georgia Pacific in that town. Not a bad place to live.
    http://towniejobs.com/jobs/Ohio/Pickaway/Circleville/

I currently live and work in DeKalb, IL. There is a GE Motor plant I can see out the window from our plant.

It looks like GE posts their jobs to the public so they should be easy to search for. And seeing as how you already work for the company I wouldn't give it a second though looking up the main number for the plant, explain your situation and get your foot in the door. Both of these towns are small and you shouldn't get the "who the hell are you?" treatment but at least some helpful information.

Wasn't sure what that meant @ GE...It means a lot of different things at other plants.
"our" skilled trades is Machinists, tool room personnel, production folks..
We have Machinists positions available (CNC) if that's any help to you....

Grumpy....You need to weigh out your options...How good is your severance package? Is there a retirement pension that goes with it? That type of thing.

It seems pretty obvious to me that GE doesn't want to keep you people, or they would be in there offering certain positions.

You may be further ahead to take the package and move on. I did....not with GE.......and never regretted it........I still have all that money in the bank.

Sorry for your situation man. I'm 26 and have seen this degradation of my fathers generation all around me. It's sick.
Let me know if you need me to check anything out for you up here, or a place to crash while you check things out.

Ive been to the jet turbine plant in Madisonville for an interview as an engineering intern but that was 10 years ago. nice clean plant but the town or lack of it was awful so I p***ed. I was 20 at the time and needed a constant supply of hot young dumb girls to fill my time. Cant offer any more info than that.

  29. I can't offer you anything but a personal observation.

I did the relocate thing in November. Moved from Detroit to Knoxville(ish) Tennessee. By myself, left the wife and kids up in the D until (if?) the house sells.

The job I have is awesome, I'd almost say it's a dream job. The money is decent, but the quality of work is really good. The coworkers are great, it's just good. And it's in an area I've wanted to live in for years.

However, I'm looking to go back home. When you leave somewhere you've spent your whole life in, you give up alot. We won't have the support system (ie when we need an instant babysitter, our parents will be 600 miles away instead of 6 minutes), friends left behind, and at least here, the wage scale is alot less. Although if the big 3 get their way, it won't be that great at home, either... I may have felt different if the wife and kids were here with me, but for now I just don't think it's gonna work.

You can get a job almost anywhere, but you have to weigh what you're gaining with what you're giving up.

My two cents. And good luck to you, it rips your heart out having to make such decisions. If only it were like when my parents were my age, and you could just walk into the big 3 plants and work for 30 years.

I understand. It is taking it's toll on me. It's on my mind every waking minute.
I hate the thought of making my kids leave their friends and everything they know. I understand it happens to people all the time, but it still ****s.

I also understand that it's 99% likely that I won't be able to make what I do now. GE has given us alot. My wife hasn't had to work since my son was born 11 years ago. And I also have a 14yr old daughter. So what GE has given me is the ability for my wife to be a stay at home mom for my kids.
So I appreciate GE for that.

I'll be doing some research into some of the plants HAMBers have mentioned.
I have 6 weeks til production ends and we go on lay-off. So it'll be hectic I'm sure.

Thank you again, to everyone who's replied.
