I live in a busy summer resort on the East Coast of NZ - some may know it from the Beach Hop. We decided to try a small Hot Rod Show in the community hall over the Christmas/New Year period while the holiday makers are here. It'll be an annual event with a different theme each year - this time was "Buckets at the Beach". All up we had 18 cars on display inside the hall with many more outside. Those inside were up for $500 cash for both Peoples Choice and Best Display. The cars were spaced with plenty of room to view. We broke even before Noon on the 2nd day.... Alan Light won People's Choice - 390FE with twin carbs. Bill Fryer's runs a blown 272 Y Block, 4 speed and Mk4 Zephyr rear. Bryan Wyatt's Track T powered by 350 Chev. Note the surf display. Colin and Kay Lane from Wellington started drag racing their T back in the late 60s. Does wheelstands on the street! At the other end of the scale is Eric Livingstone's 426 Hemi powered Bucket. Runs 10s on the strip and 165mph on the flying mile! One TRICK little car! Gavin Tindall hand made the entire body and radiator surround from alloy. Last season Glenn Daniels raced a Junior Dragster. Over the winter he built this new race car with his Mum & Dad. First time Hot Rod built by Jason & Tracey Forrestor and their wee baby Shelby. Best Display went to Leo and Kim with this fantastic Beach scene complete with fishing rods and blow up dolls.... Paul Anderson is a transplanted Aussie and owns this twin supercharged Bucket. John Reid is one of NZ's best Rod Builders. He started with this T Bucket back in the late 60s. Starry Malcolm and Buck Rodgers are restoring it back to its former glory. Glenn Daniels Mum & Dad (Steve & Ally) own this T which is on a space frame ch***is. Steve Dunn's small block Chev Bucket with a Jag rear end. Note the 6x2 carbs! Another famous NZ T Bucket - Terry Furness built this back in the late 60s, sold it, then brought it back and now enjoys his retirement with it. An interesting car parked outside - Crazy Larry's radical Ford Prefect. And finally, the 1959 Pontiac Catalina that will be GIVEN AWAY at Beach Hop 08 was unveiled in its new glory - Candy Tangerine over silver mini-flake. All it takes to win this car is to purchase a $5 programme at the Festival, fill out the form and place in the box and then be present when we make the draw on May 3rd 2008.
Thanks Mike! And you are quite right - No 2 of these T Buckets are the same, which was appealing to the public. There were a few other cars in the Show including a chopped & blown 34 coupe and a yellow Nash Metropolitan from the USA that is on a New Zealand tour. Cheers, Noddy
Hey Noddy, sounds like the show was a sucess, when you headed up to Kumeu ? hope to be ther shortly after lunch Fri.
Hell yeah! Craig is heading up Thursday to grab us a spot and we're bringing the Poncho up on Friday.... Did someone say HAMB beers??? Noddy
I actually think he STARTED with a Zephyr! But, where does the Ardun come into it??? I was only a kid when this Bucket hit the road and I can't recall any Ardun.... Noddy

Double blowers on the black T???? That's got to be for show. I've never seen them stacked like that before. Crazy yet interesting. monkey
No Monkey - the blowers are functional. Paul drove it to and from the Show - a 2 hour trip each way..... and it goes REAL well! BTW - there are over 70 skulls on the car - and if I had a photo of the owner then you'd see why. He is a tattooist/piercer. Noddy
ho ho.. my mate Al zymer is visiting again . but any way what happened to Greers car,I never saw it finished or even near running although it was complete.
I think you are correct! Notice the engine is painted FORD blue... And here it is being DRIVEN to the Port Road street drags last November... Noddy
Just got this from Colin "Shady" Lane... remember he has been racing this car since the 60s! "<!--StartFragment -->Hi just an old oil burnner 272 ford v8 running 3 holley 2 barrels on offie manifold. offie tappet covers are still comming from the usa. the heads have been done up but the mains are shot . have a 292 lined up so would rather spend mony on the bigger engine with scored bores ,thinking of 1/8 over bore would give me 312.. of corse the ultimit would be a 300 stroked flat head , have a 45 over merc flatte sitting in the shed. a kit from speedway in nabrasker 4.1/4 stroker crank ,3/3/8 pistons and rods etc is $1700 U.S" More pics to come.... Noddy
No problem RBM and Russell - I'm pretty sure NZ Hot Rod Mag and Petrolhead have featured the Show so make sure you pick up a copy. See you at Kumeu with our Pontiac give away..... new wheels and 1000 watt stereo! Noddy
It must be late 60's NZHRM because "Les Ireland" lives here ,I often see his Red Mk1 Convert running around Brisbane .He's been here for years.
Shady's cool, I sold him some scoops a while back and got a letter in the mail complete with a photo of some old wrappin paper from 1960's I guess that came from Uncle Sams (no relation) speed shop in AKL.
I bought an early sixties book on hopping up chev's from Shady on trade-me last year. Written on the cover in faded pen was: Colin Lane Drag King Wellington Cracked me up when I saw it
