I finally took my motor in to get rebuilt. But what i want to know is what year and what kind of car or truck this motor came out of because we dont have any idea. It was sitting in my grandpas shed for 16 years. But here are the pictures i took or it. I think i took the rite pictures of the casting numbers to identify the year it is from.
Damn. This really ****s i wanted a 350. I think i am going to check the other block that i have and see if its a 350, and if it is I will take that block on monday.
Yeah i know that but i also have another block that i think is a 350. I am going to get the numbers off of this one and if it is I am going to see if they will let me swap the blocks because they havent started on it yet. The shop isnt open again untill monday so I am trying to get ahold of the man who runs the shop.
I believe you have a mix of parts. The intake looks older than the block. You should try to find out what yhe heads are. If they are small chamber big valve heads thats you're best starting point.
I know nothing is wrong with a 307, but there is a 95 horsepower difference then a 350. And this motor has to pull this 18.5 foot Cadillac. I just want power to be there. And i know the intake looks older, but that is the intake i want to use. Do you guys have a website to show me how much horsepower the stock 331 Cadillac made?
My book goes up to 1952 and it says that the 331 was 160 horse from 49-51 then it jumped up to 190 for 1952.
Alright i called my Gramps and he went out and checked out the other block and there wasn't and numbers like the 307 block has. Here are the numbers he gave me. Can you guys help me with these ones. GM 57-165 and the other one is 468854D
The intake looks to be off an early 327 with a WCFB or AFB. The last 4 numbers didn't jive though (4467) . It has that old school look and should be fine on a mild street motor. Looks like 230, try this site it has a lot of info that you may want. http://100megsfree4.com/cadillac//cad1950/cad54s.htm We stuck a 307 in my sons 70 chev half ton some years back. I put a pair of early power pack heads on it (not the thing to do with unleaded gas) a qj intake with a spread bore Holley and an early/mid 70s Z28 hydraulic cam. It ran down the road like a bandit, got 16 mpg in the truck and pulled a cattle trailer full of furniture back from Texas without an issue. Set up right that engine should be fine but If I had my choice I would go with the 350.
That second set of numbers do not make sense for a Chevy block. All SBC blocks have the casting number in the same format and location as the first one that you had in the picture in the first post.
Yeah i know that, But i didn't get these ones. I had called up my grandpa and these are the ones he gave me. I think he is looking at the wrong spot or something. We think this block is a 350 thought. It was in my dads truck many years back, and it is out of a cop car, so the man said that gave us the engine. But who knows. I will go over to Tulare and look for myself tomorrow. I will get pics up soon about the engine.
its not the horsepower your stock caddy had, but it was hooked to a torque multiplying hydramatic ******. the 4 speed hydro would pull a tank. putting a stock 307 engine in a 54 caddy would be like ******* in the wind...you would only do it once.... if you are not using the hydro ******, you need a torque producing engine. just my thoughts... cadillac dave
if you are paying to get the 307 or 350 rebuilt you might as well just have the 331 rebuilt instead. you will be much happier with the results. you can even get some hop-up parts like a slightly bigger cam and a better carb. i think it would be a much more respectable car with a 331 instead of a run-of-the-mill SBC. No offense to the SBC guys. i just think they belong in chevys.
Listen to this guy 54Caddy...I keep telling you to overhual the 331"...and besides that...the stock Caddy ****** will BOLT back up to it...the Hydra won't to the Chevy...and you won't have to FIGURE out new motor mounts, new ****** mounts, new driveshaft, new exhaust, new rad outlets/inlets, new ****** shifting linkage...do you REALLY know how much work it is to put a Chevy in that Caddy...???
