Hey all, I have a 53 chevy 150 model and I plan to put in a 327 motor to get me to the shops a lil quicker. Its currently got a 56' blue flame, torque tube set up. Are there any Aussies out there who know of any readily available rear ends (open driveline, diff, 60 inch wide rear end) which will fit in it?

I would think an FJ Holden (I think thats the one) would be close, but I'm only guessing here.

No...no way...ha ha ha FJ diffs are but one step up from spaghetti.

Borg warner from a XA through XF falcon . The same diff head is used in everything in Australia,Valiant,Falcon, Holden, Centura ( too narrow) Ford Cortina ( 4 stud only ) all Holden Commodores including the latest with LSD etc .Various ratios are available from all these different models to fit . Cheaper than 9" and just as durable.
If you are amember of the ASSRF there build manual has all the diff widths available on all cars in Australia ,just piuck which one will be the right track and start ringing wreckers.

  5. I'm with mercmad. Falcon diffs (pre disc-brake) are 61" from drum face to drum face. I think they come in a 3.23 ratio.

Okay...What was Holden's version of the Camaro, from 70-79?
and did it have a 10 or 12 bolt rear end?

a Camaro rear end from those years requires you to simply re-drill the leaf spring centering pins (roughly) 1/2 inch forward of thier original positionn, then install. the e-brake even works! I CANNOT imagine a 327 killing one.

Positrac was an option here for all years mentioned, and 12 bolts. though rare, require the same amount of work.

No Muss, No fuus, bolt it in and DRIVE.

  7. commodore rear in mine

  8. We were looking at putting a 350 in my brothers 54, had problems with steering box, also king pin suspension, drums. As for the rear end – I will send some info by PM

  9. to answer lux blue, that gong goes to the HQ- HZ series.
so rhys hang onto bucko's kinga to steal the diff from for your 54 chassis...

  11. I'm currently searching for a hq diff to go into my 54, got given a hq sedan the other day, and ripped the engine and auto out but of course the diff is coiled and linked, so am on the search for a ute at the moment.

does anyone know if the axle to spring mounts for 54 -hq are the same also if the same applies for the spring length and mounting?

HQ's áre 61"wide, whereas the original was 60"wide.

I ran an XT Falcon 8" on new saddle mounts drilled something like 2" forward of centre. Made the saddles with 4x2 boxed tubing on its narrow side, and had the axles re-driled for Chev wheels.

Spark, what happened to the original running gear. Im always on the look-out for more blue flames :)

  13. i would be looking into a '55-'64 chevy rear end.

Are there any Volvo's out there? The 740's have a 60" inch wide axle, I read that they are the same as the Ford 8.8 axle (Dana).

  15.
He also has another 54 4door rough body, bashed in rear door, but the blue flame and box is under the work bench (has been for 15 years) to go in the rough shell – one day??? Mate I’ve tried a few times but he won’t part with it, sorry.

I put a '55 Chevy rear in my '50 Pontiac, width was perfect, just re-drilled the saddles. Any would be street machiner will throw out a stock chevy rear for their chosen 9 inch.

Does the Camaro rear end from those years run discs or drums?

  20. Friend has a VK-L Commo unit, fits beautiful, he even used the stock 4 link, and made new crossmembers to suit, very easy fit, sits nice, and cheap.

    Cheers,
