so Im in barnes and knoble today and see a book on the salt flats and fastest cycles published in 2007 which makes me curious because I cant recall ever seeing a book for the cars or any other book dedicated to the salt flats or land speed racing, if anyone knows of one lets here about it.
Dude, I'd hate to think you never walk in a bookstore every now and then. Perhaps you saw a modern cl***ic, "Bonneville - The Fastest Place in the World" by Louise Ann Noeth and the new "World's Fastest Motorcycle" by John Stein.
I can't speak to Speedtools "Worlds Fastest Motorcycle, but I recemmend Louise Noeths book highly. History of the lake, how it came to be, how racing on it got started - which was a flippin' expedition just to get there - and the like.* Big book, many excellent and clear photos in B&W from the early days as well as a lot of historic photos in color up to today. Good stuff. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Some of the down under gang - Oz, NZ - ought to write a similar history of Lake Gairdner. Right now it's a tough trek to get there and I understand the last 200 miles are a simple and rough dirt road. It's a big lake. Over 100 miles in one direction I believe and the salt is very thick compared to Bonneville before the potash mining started.
Any of you recongnize a picture of this bike in your books? If so I'd like to know what book it is so I can let my friend know about it. This was taken in 1955. Thanks Ol Blue
"Land Speed" Louise's book is great. I've got one from the book signing. I now have lots of great signatures.
I have to vouch for Louise's book. Fantastic. I bet Hadfield would have the links to make that book. Who ever does don't let Norm Hardinge anywhere near it, the slimy ****.
To keep up on the available books, buy one from Motor Books International and you will get about three catalogs a year. Other great ***les, "When The Hot Rods Ran". All the pictures were shot in one day in 1938. Another is "Ab & Marv Jenkins. The Studebaker connection and the Mormon Meteors". Ab Jenkins must have been the original Superman. The dirt road from Iron Knob to lake Gairdner is much improved, only 126 easy miles.
Did you do a search on this? Also, a simple online search "books-bonneville, utah racing" is a online one to try also.
All you guys that like LSLs book, have you looked at page 123 where she calls me a "Big bumper"? Not to sure how I feel about that. I know I have a weight issue. I don't think name calling helps.
Now that we got Landspeed Louise's Corvette top to work right, I guess I can recommend her book too. She is really cool and a good writer.
If Ab hadn't been such a promoter of Bonneville, we might not have ever been racing on the salt. He's the giant upon whose shoulders all the great salt racers stood on.
Thanks Ive never seen louises book, I hit the book stores a couple of times a month, the worlds fastest motorcycles was the book I was refering to. now I know what to ask them to order. Thanks for the info
When I read it I took it to be that you bumped the record by a big percentage . . . so high that it will be tough to reach.
In 90 Doug Robbinson's car went 158 in this cl***. I believe this is the current record. I guess "Old Bumper" is fair. It always tickled me the way it sounded in LSLs book.
