Been working on a panel and I sprayed SEM self etch over existing primer because the sheen helped out in checking for panel straightness. Question is, will it hurt to spray self etch over primer, do I have to remove the etch before I go over it again with a coat of Reg primer. will it be ok, or should I be concerned about any reactions, or adhesion/ lifting problems Thanks
wish you asked yesterday. my auto body class is on mondays. my teacher never said anything about putting the etching over regular primer. he only said to put underneath the regular primer. i hope i remember him correctly. but im sure someone here could help you a lot more.
Self Etching primer is primarily used to etch into metals , iron, galv. , aluminum , etc . I've never used it over existing primer but if you put it over a urethane primer after it's already "locked up" ( cured ) then get that shit off or you will have paint coming off in sheets !
What is regular primer? Its not a very good idea in any case, but the damage might be less in one case than another.
Think of self etch as lacquer primer with acid in it. if used thin it won't hurt where ever you put it. If primer has a hardner your OK for sure and if your using lac. primer you need to check out a better primer anyway. Don
I'd sand it off. Most self etch primers are weak when not bonded to bare metal. If you want to sight a panel for straightness, wet it with wax and grease remover, then you can wipe it down, and proceed with more primer or paint.
