one of the most overlooked and common culprits is a separated tread on a tire. did this happen all of a sudden or get worse gradually?

After doing what Mike said, the very next thing to check on any 54 thru 56 Ford or Merc is the front crossmember where the lower A arms attach. These cars have an excellent front suspension, but this is a rust prone area. Parts are easily available to repair these front ends, and they work very well.

If you don't find anything from what was mentioned above, have the wheels checked for balance.

Was FoMoCo using ball joints by '56?

Sounds like a bad ball joint or tie rod end shimmy.

Get it up firmly on jack stands and have someone wiggle the tire while you look underneath. Probably ball joints as Gotgas suggested above.

If ya gots bias plys try some different wheels and tires up front. Quick and easy way to check if it's wheel/tire related. Mine started shakin about 55-60 and went away at about 70. Switched to radials and the problem went away.

  8. Check the idler arm.

I had a 54 Ford coupe that did the same thing.

Bought it from a guy at work about 62.
He bought it for his daughter.
    Price, $125.

I offered to fix it for him, he offered me the car for $90.
I bought it, one $9. idler arm later I was sailing down the highway with no probs.

To check the u-joints/driveline, put the back of the car up on jack stands (facing in a safe direction) and get in and drive it a bit. If the vibration is still there, it could be the driveline. If not, most likely it's somewhere in the front end. Start isolating the issue and that will help you find your problem.
