Started a new thread yesterday but I got no response. Maybe I was too cleaver in the ***le and people thought I was complaining or something. So here it is again with a different header- Guys, I would like to draw on your collective wisdom. I'm building a '35 Ford pick up with a z'd frame on both ends. My question is concerning the front. From axle centerline to frame drop is 33". Is shortening the split wishbones to 30" [centerline to pivot] too short? Or should I go with 4 bars? I can't go longer because the frame not only drops down at the Z but widens out as well.
Thanks ahead of time for your input

  2. The longer the better. Can you make them longer and attatch to the side of the framerail?

  3. Seems like the Z would be the natural place to attach them. That way an additional piece of metal would not have to hang down from the frame rail for the tie rod end to go thru.

Could you attach the tie rod end from the inside of the Z, instead of the outside as is more common? This would let you attach there even thought the frame is wider at that point?

    30" is a little short,but shouldn't cause any problems.

Mine are about 42" and mounted just after the Z on a 2" metal bracket that hangs down from the frame.

Hey 29JAY,, have a similar question on the split wishbones if you can help me out. Do the wishbones have to be at 90 degrees to the front axle? Also, the height of the anchor point is what will determine the caster ,isn't it. or do the bones need to be on a level plane front to back?

Speedway Motors hairpin wishbones are 27" long. Add the tie rod end on one end and the bracket on the axle end and you have about a 30" over all length. Hundreds, if not thousands of rods have used wishbones of this length. Wishbones do not have to be at 90 degrees to the axle nor do they need to be absolutely horizontal.

You can bend the 'bones to get the caster you need.

You can also turn the upside down,if it will help.

The set I used on my A sedan needed a "wedge" cutout of the wishbones to get the caster right. I then welded them back together at about 7 degrees. They were roughly 32" long after I shortened them a bit and welded the bung in. You should have no problem with 30" as has been said. I agree that they would look better mounted to the Z'd frame rail if you can swing that without major body mods. Just my oppinion though.
