ROLLER Painting cars? Clueless "experts"? TRADITIONAL hot rodding?

This isn't a Barrett-Jackson bashing thread, so try not to turn it into one, but I watched some of the auction last night because I like watching the cheaper stuff sell. I can actually relate to it.

During the auction for the Monster Garage milk truck the announcer kept commenting on the roller-applied paint job and how popular the technique has become in the traditional hot rod scene. Specifically to have the paint appear rough and thick.

I like to consider myself pretty much on the pulse of the hot rod world as I see over 45,000 cars each year and talk to just about as many hot rodders. I can't think of even one car that I know is roller painted.

There were a few other comments about the cars rolling across the auction block that were equally as clueless - some bordering on insulting.

My point here? Mostly just venting frustration, yet again, at the world's view of traditional hot rodding. I know the announcers can't be experts in all things car-related, and are right WAY more than they are wrong. It just stuck in my craw, that's all.

Maybe a point here would be to ask if there is any way to have more people "get it"...or should we care?

    OK, rant over.

Yep, it is good that on BJ they are moving on to the big bucks cars, something they know all about. As for painting with a roller, it has been heavily discussed here and even a feature in HOT ROD. I have seen one for sure, the guy color sanded it and polished. It looked good, but with all of the work a real paint would have been the way to go.

Painting with a roller using high quality paint is common practice with boats.
It usually involves a process called rolling and tipping. Here is a link to a video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTVVjzbA72U He isn't very exciting to watch but it is a good demo.

I know it's been discussed. But, like you said, it was to get a sprayed looking end result after LOTS of work to smooth it out. His comment was that lots of guys wanted it to look rough and thick.

HOT ROD magazine just did a 'how to' article on roller-painting your car. Somehow I think my outcome would look a little different from theres

Take comfort in it Kirk. Actual traditional hot rodding is a long way from becoming mainstream... and in many ways, I think that is a very good thing.

I liked the steam powered ChrisCraft boat that Magnante told the world was fibergl***. Wait, this is wood.............
Remember last year or the year before when he was going on and on about the Chevelle SS 'clone', only to find out the serial # was correct and it was real. No one can know everything about every car, but they have the opportunity to research the vehicles before the auction to prepare some background info. It would sure save some embarr***ment............

The announcers of the show could be considered the salesmen of the organization. I don't mean this as disrespectfully as is sounds, but when have you ever found salesmen to know much about the goods they are selling?

Sales involves a lot more than technical knowledge.

Good point. I don't think I could ramble on and on up there to fill the time without saying something wrong, but I don't think I'd call something popular that I was just pulling out of my ***.

Somehow the BJ announcers remind me of my little brother, His concept is "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with ********". I'd think that sometimes the notes that are handed to them on certain cars aren't all that complete either. = Here's your 20 second blurb on this car.

I don't think that we can expect the general public to know what is traditional and what is not, when we can't decide ourselves.
We have people on the forum complimenting a member for buying the RPU from Monster Garage and it is a rat rod pure and simple.
If that car had applied for membership in our club in the fifties there is no way we would have accepted it.
I guess that sticks as much in my craw as roller painting and calling primered cars, in general, rat rods.
    end of rant.
PS, I enjoy listening to Mike Joy and he has certainly paid his dues to be there.

I've known quite a few cars up here that are roller painted, but that was decades ago...I'd certainly NOT call it a trend...but what would I know, I'm just a stupid fabricator...

Why???? You can't teach "getting it".....you either get it or ya don't.....regardless of the subject matter, be it trad rods, sports cars, video games, knitting or whatever.......:)

BUT...if most of us were asked to ad-lib on live tv about a niche in the automotive world we don't focus on, we would probably sound clueless too.
Thats why when I go to a concourse I keep my mouth shut and ask lots of polite questions.

I've been guilty of painting a car or two with a brush and then sanding it down to somewhat of a smooth finish back many years ago,,,,,

Seems I did read in one of the magazines a year or so ago about painting a car with a roller,,,I think they did a falcon,,,,but hardly traditional. HRP

I think if you looked at the BJ auctions as like the Olympics of Used Cars Sales, what happens would be more palatable.

I sure laughed at the "road racer" oriented announcers definition of "rat rod, as anything that is in primer" WTF?

They did make one comment that was correct - when referring to the Burbank Choppers and Traditional Hot Rod guys in general "they don't like the term rat rod".

  27. I think the general public and mainstreaming hot rod world gets the "Rat Rod" thing... which is good, for us, who are into traditional hot rodding and preserving history.

If they mess with history, and drag it through the mud... I have an ethical problem with it.

Kinda like when someone builds a super low Model A sedan with a stretched suicide front end, tractor grille and zoomies... and THINKS his rat rod is a "Traditional Hot Rod"...

it's my personal duty to set things straight.

    Sam.

My uncle once brought home a green volkswagen that had been painted with a roller, and you know what? It LOOKED like it had been painted with a roller. It looked like my bedroom wall.

On the flip side, the guy with the off-road Ford truck at the bicycle shop painted his truck semi-gloss black with a roller and it actually came out nice. It was a special kind of paint. I'm pretty sure Winfield and Watson didn't get their rise to fame with roller jobs... old vacuums, though, now THAT's traditional!

Hemi, me thinks you are a bit old, or at least old thinking if you remember vacuum cleaner spray jobs. Kirby vacuum cleaners and their spray attachments were for sure traditional. My brothers mother in law painted her 46 Ford two door in 1956 with a Kirby and it came out almost nice. She was so proud.
