The most is that I dropped the bottle and grabbed a wrench. Sober now, building occupies my time. 63 years old and the mind of a 40 year old..
All the great and knowledgeable people that I've meet..
Take the babies mommy for long ride in my Hot Rods..

seeing someone ( usually it's a kid) take pieces of a car that nobody thought would ever drive again and make something cool out of it, or taking a car that nobody thought could be made into a hot rod and making it look so good everybody wants one.

    also, i'd like to see brandy's ***s

what i enjoy is dreaming about a look.... relaxing and working on the cars.... driving the hell out of them.

i suppose what makes me proud is working hard and finishing a car, and keeping tradition alive through multi-generations of family. i'm a little bummed that i dont have a son, cause i'm 3rd generation car guy in my family and would love to keep it going. i'm working on my daughter though :)

The looks on peoples faces when I am out driving, and the stories (well some of the stories anyways) that you get to hear from all the old timers.

The fact that I`am connecting with a past genertion that has the same interests as mine. I love being the one that gets to share in some of thier secrets when they were hotrodders and knowing that I will have a part in keeping the legacy alive.
That and scaring the hell out of the neighbors when I fire up the roadster

Now here is question that I've been thinkin' earlier few times, but I don't know how to answer. My friend had t-shirt with Harley-logo and text something like
"If I'll have to explain, you wouldn't understand". So that would be my answer for this question!

That's great! Ok, here is mine...

I taught my son how to weld (at the age of six, so that is three years ago). Notice his gloves!

Keep p***in' wrenches... but never tell anyone you saw me with baseball-cap in my head!

so far what I like best is finding a pile of old junk stashed in the woods and have people look at me like I'm mentally challenged when I whoop like I've just struck gold. The looks on their faces when you tell em you are going to use the parts in your hot rod are equally amusing!
this summer I pulled 3 model A frames and a 39 trans and front end out of the woods. You would've whooped too.

Visualization to realization and doing all the steps in between by myself. There is always great satisfaction in creating something with one's own hands and then using it and having others appreciate the quality and effort that went into the build. Each facet is a reflection on me and my personality (or whomever is doing the build). In my case, if it's not right and perfect, it gets more attention.

    People, people, people.

Proud? Lots of reasons for that.

To start with, it's nice to NOT be one of the 99% of the people i know and work with who seemingly get up every day for nothing. Yeah, beating on an old car isn't "useful" by most standards, but I'll have something to show for it when I'm done! I work with a lot of guys who's life revolves around working, watching football or some random sitcom, and doing/buying whatever Wifey tells them to. To me, that's not enough reason to get up in the morning.

The historical aspect of this hobby/disease is another big influence. I'm at least the third generation aflicted with this stuff (nobody who's still alive remembers my great grandfather). My grandfather taught auto mechanics at the local high school in Chester, SC, and worked the concession stand at the drag strip there every weekend. He was there when Don Garlits set a record with those newfangled M&H slicks, and also when things went south for the poor guy when he got burned so badly. My dad and my uncle both built and raced tri-five chevy's in high school (this was in the mid 60's), and got into untold amounts of trouble. I'm 23, and working on my first project, though I've been around the stuff for several years. It's just cool to go back and do things the way they were done in a different time and place.

There's plenty of stuff to be proud of, be it the generosity of the people you hang around with (the same people that "proper" society lables "hoodlums" and steers clear of in public), the preservation of history, or just the fun of gettin out there and doing something with a pile of rust and grease that most people would write off as junk. It's just a great thing to be a part of.

The good people that came before me that I idolized. I only hope to be as good a person as these guys were. I see a lot of that character here on the HAMB and that's why I enjoy my time here.

I like to figure things out, and then do them myself to the best of my ability. I enjoy home renovation for the same reason.

I'm proud and glad to be a hot rodder when I go home from a rough 10 hour day of fighting problems with brand new cars......and brand new car owners, and I can walk out in the garage to see my sedan and Flower's roadster sitting there ooozing peace and tranquility. All of a sudden the sacrifices seem justified.

Oh yeah......cool people like Brandy help alot too.

Keep at her, she'll come around. Growing up my dad's friends all razzed him about only having girls and not having any sons to build cars and race with. My dad always took it in stride and was very proud of his two girls and how much they helped him in the garage. Not too long ago one of those guys, a very good friend of my dad's, told me that I turned out to be more of a 'car guy' than any of their sons. They never saw that coming! :D

    That made me pretty proud.

I am also proud of our heritage. It is neat to have a way to connect with generations of the past. Many an evening in the garage a person couldn't tell what year it is. Is it '58 or '08?

I am also really proud of the majority of the people in the hobby. Good people go back along time. I have always found the car club 'courtesy cards' of the 50s and 60s to be a really special thing. You can see the same kind of good citizenship and pride in today's clubs as well. I think the Chrome Czars recent HCPU charitable donations are a great example of that.:)

  29. Fooling people into thinking I actually own a running car, and going to shows like Viva in my Honda civic, slicked back hair, 6" cuffs, sitting on someone elses car telling everyone it's mine.
    That's what it's all about.
