Goodguys gives back to the HAMB

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by **DONOTDELETE**, May 24, 2004.

  1. After all the HAMB has given to me by the way of inspiration, connections and NEW boss (yep, I work for KIRK! now)- I felt it was time to give back- and give you a chance to give back as well.
This season KIRK! and I have developed a very HAMB-friendly element for most of the Goodguys events called the "GARAGE GROWN" area specifically for Retro Rods and Kool Kustoms. This an area designed specifically for all types of tradtional rides to feel welcome and to make a space of their own inside the event. For the first event in Pleasanton we invited 30 cars and gave them free entries so we could see how it would go.
It was great! The people were great and had a really good time. We just want these things to get bigger until it's "the show" inside the show. How I figure you can be a part and feel good about supporting the HAMB is I will give you everything you need to be a part of the "GARAGE GROWN" area for the upcoming event in Pleasanton (June 5 & 6) and you can donate your entry fee to the HAMB. Sound cool?
On top of having our own area we will also have special awards that are just for this area designed to look like vintage car club plaques, rather than the old boring square wood plaques. I'll leave it to the people who attended the last one to give their opinion of how it went, and as it grows it will only get better. Coverage of the last one is in the current (June 04) Gazette, but be a part of the next one and support the HAMB at the same time (without being a part of some crazy bidding war).

TO MAKE IT TOTALLY CLEAR: The first 10 to donate their entry fee to Ryan will get the a vehicle registration and two weekend p***es, plus added top-secret goodies NO ONE ELSE will get!

The response here will decide how this will go in the future and which events will have GARAGE GROWN areas- Look for this same offer for upcoming events (soon to come: Indy info) Thanks all for the response- PLEASE support the HAMB!

Damn, sounds like a very cool thing you've got going. Refresh my memory but does Goodguys ever come around this area, Utah? If not how can we organize something like this to support the Garage Grown/HAMB?

Sounds really cool Jim. I hope you do it in Des Moines!

  7. Nothing currently- but talks of a Salt Lake event have been rumored.

We would like to grow this to have live music and interactive compe***ions as well. The area last time was outdoors as well with a giant BBQ used by the car club guys. People really got off seeing trad cars all in one area- so MUCH more impactful! The next one will be totally outdoors. I'll be running this one by myself since KIRK! will be at Michigan BILLETPROOF, could use a couple volunteers to help me police the area and keep the area to just traditional Rods & Kustoms.

  8. Sounds cool!! I'll sign up for Columbus or maybee Charlotte.

  9. Most events from here out will have a "GARAGE GROWN" area.

  10. Are you going to do it Indy this year.

If so please send me my free entry thank you [IMG]

I got a pretty cool 40 Ford Coupe I built at home in the garage [IMG]

Here's hoping the best for you and this new venture. I have to agree it would save walking all over an event to find OUR kind of rides. Will BOYD be allowed into this area or will it be Billet and Boyd proof? [IMG] [IMG]

  14. WHOA! Right now I'm just working on the next Pleasanton event, but I would VERY MUCH like to continue this plan of supporting the HAMB all across the country. Thanks Jim

    JimA-
Hey keep me posted if anything does happen in Salt Lake. I would like to help out and get involved anyway I could...

  16. I could write a million words and still not get all the details, but it doesn't cost any extra to attend the "GARAGE GROWN" areas and you don't need to sign up in advance. Just park in the area and hang out with your buddies. [IMG]

YOU said it, not me- but this area is for traditional Rods and Kustoms ONLY.

this sounds like a great thing. it almost makes me want to fork out $8.00 for parking and $12.00 to get in, just to see this part of the show.

Can get a bunch of us at Charlotte

  20. We had talked in the past here about making a "HAMB-area", then when KIRK! joined me it became a HUGE priority! This is essentially it, with a ***le the general public can understand. So it's one part JimA, one part BILLETPROOF with a bunch of HAMBers mixed in. I've already met tons of HAMBers at events- this will make it that much easier, Jim

  21. Very cool idea! Don't forget Spokane! I was thinking of skipping the show, due to the rather high cost, an so many cars I'm not that interested in. Do this for Spokane, and I'll be there.

That's EXACTLY the idea. I'm stoked people are getting the plan here.

Yes there will be one at Indy and at Columbus.

In fact I want to put together a cruise from Detroit to Indy (since it's the following weekend). Every BILLETPROOF attendee that cruises with me and Roger will get a FREE p*** to Indy. We'll be going that Thursday after BILLETPROOF Michigan. See me at the show for more details.

..........not wanting to get involved in "politics," but in the early 90's, I was invited to put on the model car show at two GG events in Carlisle and one at Maple Grove. GG couldn't have been any more supportive. The first year at Carlisle, Kustom legend Frank Livingston was my contact. He went WAY out of his way to provide anything we needed. Unlike NSRA (who I tried to work with in York since our club, the Central PA Model Car Club, was based in York), GG provided us with indoor space FREE, tables, arranged for Revell to donate CASES of kits to give away, really nice plaques as awards, free p***es for my "staff" and Frank came around several times throughout the day to see if we needed anything. They were all about seeing that we had FUN!!
I know there are some with issues over costs, but it DOES take money to run these events. Thanks JimA & KIRK! for keeping your eyes and ears open and trying to give something back!!!!! [IMG]

Well, that does it. I guess I'm going to have to join GG's. Nsra only allowed a trad area on Fridays at York. If this Garage Grown makes it to Rienbeck, I'm there!

I'll be in Indy. How will we know where this area is? Usually you are just doing good to get in and find a spot to park in Indy.

The area is outside this time so you actually can't leave your car overnight.

The "official" special area is on Saturday so that should work just fine.
