Check craigslist. And lowrider message boards like LIL. Truspoke had a booth at sema. They're gonna start repopping Tru's. But they're only starting with certain styles and limited options for sizes and offsets. Everyone I've talked to says they suck at communicating. Poor customer service. They never answer emails. If anyone answers the phone, they know absolutely nothing about what/when/where new Truspokes will be available for purchase. You're better off trying to find an OG set for now.
And Rikster just said Winfield's first lace job was '66- by then skinny whites were definitely the norm. How many of your car mags show lace paint cars with wide whites??? I can't think of many off the top of my head. Not busting balls- I love the paint on the Ford, but just saying that considering your paint job, maybe you should rethink the build date you're aiming for? In the 60's people were 'thinking about' cars that drove themselves, just as (according to Rikster) Winfield was 'thinking about' lace paint. That doesn't make either era-correct for '61. Just sayin'. I'm not a nut for era-correctness, but if you're gonna build a car by that way, I say look closer at the magazines.
I'm not claiming to be building a period correct car. I'm just trying to put myself in a certain mindset when designing it. There are actually extremely few cars before the '70s with lace jobs. It doesn't mean it wasn't done, and it most certainly could have.
Thanks, I got them here, but I beleive Mooneyes is selling them now too. http://www.custombuiltsteelwheels.com/html/new_products.html
Cadillac is not a fuzzy dice car . What's coming down the pike is a circus wagon . This is a hubcap car . If you replace the wheels with modern crack wheels you will have mixed era's and the identity will be confused . No one ever successfully put mags on a 1961 Cadillac not even Jimmy Vaughn .... Try 59/60 Eldorado caps . These match the car perfectly . The radial lines on the facings compliment the tail light housings . The sharp edges set off the grill . These were in production when the car was on the drawing board in 1958 , up close the car looks like it was designed around these caps...... And in response to your quest to lower it . Everything looks better lowered . For this car I am thinking a California rake . If you don't know what that is , it means put the nose one inch higher .......
Windfeild's Caddy is a 62 . It could be the uglyest car I have ever seen up close . If the design ideas are all his , he should be stopped from ruining any more cars .....
Gene told me himself that it was a '61 and he modified the 1/4 panels and added the '62 tail lights as part of the customizing. Even so, it would have come with about a 2" WW and if customized in '62 say, would probabaly keep those on it. On another note, I just watched a '60 copyright episode of Perry Mason and in the opening scene in a parking lot was a '59 Buick with about a 1" "skinny" WW on it!
To each thier own. I love the wires on the Jimmie Vaughan car. In my opinion, if he wants wires, that's what he should get..... Agree to disagree on this one I guess. Todd
My 63 Bird will be out of the paint shop this weekend and I am going to run wide whites on Old Fenton 5 spokes that I have sittin in my shop. I just don't like the skinny whites on many customs, just my opinon.
Bashing Gene's work could only be done by a man of many talents and with a badass ride of his own... LETS SEE.
X3 I think this guy oughta post up some pics of his own bodywork so we can all see the proper way to do it..........
What are you looking for exactly? I have some.... El Presidente' arent those Appliance??...You really scored them for $50??...DAMN YOU DID GOOD!
I found a set of really bad Sabre Wheels aka Turbine wheels from a 58 Eldorado that were rusty and pitted. Had them sandblasted and chemical stripped then powdercoated a silver/aluminum looking color. They are a little hard to find, but Im glad I used these instead of the wires I was thinking of getting. Im not sure if this is considered traditional on this forum, but ohwell
By 1961 the sixties had arrived . The 1961 Cadillac had a linear design . Lots of sharp contours and points everywhere . To retro fit anything to this car is tricky . The Winfield 61 has an unbalanced look . Where as the car is so over the top as it is it needs to be taken down . The tires and skirts in conjunction with the easter egg paint job makes the car look like a cake . What happened is someone tried to make a 60's car into a 50's car . The Fleetwood as the main topic is a challenge and a half . And yes it can be done . Suicide the back doors . Shave off the fins . Close off the corners of the grill by using two grills 1960 Eldo caps . Hard color to represent the machine age . NO PEARL . Two inch whitewalls starting at the rim . No bullets . No 52 Caddy caps . No bellflower tips . Troops remember it's a Cadillac ..... The interior I picture with three swivel bucket seats that would spin all the way around so the front passengers could face the back . A cocktail pit if you will . Tiki the interior out with a corner bar behind the driver . I would leave the back seat behind the passenger facing the bar . I would use no pigment on the body , black , silver , or white and save the strong color for the interior . Instant motorama dream car !!!!! The car would be simple and still yet completely over the top.....
Carguy you sure have some interesting ideas. shave off the fins of a Cadillac??? that has to be the dumbest thing I've heard. Having a Cadillac without fins is like, well having a Cadillac without the fins!!
LOOK !!!!! NO FINS..... The car takes on a Riviera sort of profile . At this point you have something completely different . And you still have two fins left . This car was a transitional year at Cadillac . The guy who drew it went to Chevrolet . This body was recycled into the 1963 Chevrolet . Corrugated sides the cats eye in the tail lights and last but not least the shape of the grill . With the fins gone they look like they were an afterthought in the planning stage ....
This is the 727-XP . At the time the car was designed the idea of personal luxury was making it's way down the pike . The car pictured is a four door . I see it with suicide doors . The 1963 Riviera started life out in the Cadillac studios . Two were built with Cadillac crests and Cadillac tri power . With no room on the assembly line the car ended up at Buick . The XP-727 is a 61 Cadillac and the design eventually evolved into the Buick . This would make one hell of a Cadillac custom . And look !!!!!!! No fins !!!!!!
Looks like the death cry of the Thunderbird, the 1964... There was a '59 Caddy with the fins shaved in Long Beach in the early '60's when I was just a kid playing in the Ghetto. I thought it was "different"... (post '48) Caddys just don't look like Caddys without fins. That's their identity and it's why the Caddy badged Chevys they try to sell today just don't "return the favor".
You can't take the fins off of any Cadillac ..... The 1961 could be the only exception . We are all used to seeing it one way . But thats the idea to build a custom .....An original statement ....
