Not really, but it did take some time getting the carbs all operating the same.

I want to hear it from you, and post some pictures of your set up if you will.

Wow Glenn. I'd completely forgotten about this thread. Now I've only got two carbs but they're early Pontiac AFB's on a 671. :)

My oldest friend Ken's '51 Merc. Former sedan (now a convertible, all work done by Ken), runnin' eight Harley Davidson carbs on a manifold made from an old tunnel ram. Motor is a 429 Lincoln. Ken made the manifold and turned the air cleaners himself. Works like a charm!

Probably a weak spring in that 50+ year old power valve is the culprit. Try swapping in a set of new power valves frm those good folks in the UK.

So, do you have 4, 6, 8 or more carbs on your HotRod ?

    Four

    What `combination ' are you using "

Cragar manifold. Stromberg 97 carbs. (rebuilt w/ oversized throttle shafts) .045" jets. Progressive linkage, Run on the two center carbs, end ones open on demand. All four accelerator pumps are hooked up and working.

Cagle vacuum controlled fuel pressure regulator.

Used to run a Weiand 4 carb manifold, but that needed to be run with straight linkage or it'd starve the 4 end cylinders due to the runner configuration. The Cragar is an open plenum manifold.

    Center carbs have working chokes.

Gets about 14 mpg. The roller cam and 12.5:1 compression don't help matters since I've retarded the timing a bit to diminish the tendency for spark knock and I run a thick head gasket to lower the compression a tad for the street.

Did you do it 'Yourself' ?

Yes. Made my own linkage, sanded and polished the manifold. Put 12 degree ****erflies in the end cabs. Bent my own fuel lines (5/16' Steel tubing, no neoprene lines) Made the heat shield to keep the front carb base from expanding and squeezing the throttle shaft (THAT was "interesting" when it happened) because the front carb is nearly touching the remote thermostat.

If not, who did your set-up, and are you pleased with the quality, performance and price?

Do you "really" drive it allot ?

1000 miles each way to Louisville every year plus a whole lot of other places but that's the long trip every year. [IMG] Been to Bonneville (from M***) with it a couple of times as well. Actually, I drive the snot out of the car once I get behind the wheel. With a 53 gallon gas tank, I can go a ways between fill-ups and I tend to make the 1000 mile trip home from Louisville in one shot (gotta be at work on Monday marning)

Have you pulled out all of your hair trying to make it run worth a **** ?

Nope, got it dialed in really easily when I first swapped from a Holley back in the spring of '94.

Would you do it again ?

    Sure

I run 5 single barrel stromberg carbs on my GMC 270 six. Hand made intake. Took ages to get it to run right. Uses adjustable main jets.

    Previously ran 6 x 2's on a hand made intake on a Y block.

Would I do it again???? Hell yeah.......................

Real hot rods have lots of carbs.

Thanks for the suggestion Skip. Right now the Stromberg setup is sitting on the shelf waiting for another project. I'll check the power valves then. I stuck a blower on her about a year ago with a pair of Pontiac AFb's. :)

The power valve is only actuated when the accelerator pump plunger hits it and forces it open but the return springs got rusty if the carbs were left empty and they'd loose their tension and the power valves would start to leak.
