Flipper, I guess I should have explained a little more instead of just posting pics. I started with some 18ga. strips 1 1/2 wide and put them in the brake so I would end up with 3/4 legs. then just shrink and stretch until I acheived the shape I wanted for the opening. Then I transferred the marks to the car and cut out the opening and edge welded the "new" fender lip in. Then the other pic shows the skirt frame, same thing alot of shrinking to get the skirt frame to fit in the newly installed fender lip. Once both parts fit the contours of the fender right , I took the skirt frame to the donor roof and positioned it on the roof until I had a good matching shape, and just cut the panel and weld it to the edge of the skirt frame ( at the 90 degree brake of the frame). I put a 5/16 pin at the top of the skirt and 5/16 caged nut, one in the front bottom and the rear bottom corner. The plan is to insert the pin at the top and slide the bottom corners in and put in a 5/16-24 bolt in and go. I hope this helps explain the photos, if not I could take more pics for ya. Jeff
What was the donor roof that you used for the skin? Did you butt weld the skin to the frame or overlap the two?
Flipper, I will take some better pics tomorrow and post. I'm not sure what the donor roof is off( suffer from CRS) and the skin is welded over lap. welded to the verticle leg at the 90 degree brake (corner)and the horizontal leg fits into the wheel well. I'll get more pics, that will help explain. cya, Jeff
something with a low crown (early to mid 60s on up) will work. depends on the car your doing them on. on my 47 Chevy i used a 65 Ford roof and it worked perfectly. my Chevy has a little more shape to the rear fenders (and therefore the skirts) than Jeff's Buick. something we just figured out the other day. if you have a junk yard around or some old junkers in the back yard just build your frame work and then lay it on the potential donor roof and move it around till it fits good. if it is'nt close move on to the next car.
I think all the fab work etc is totally professional and well done. I just don't like it on that Buick. Something looks out of proportion somewhere. That said to each his own and Good Luck with it
