shiney new engine, manifolds rusting ugly

I got the new 283 in my chevy and painted everything up nice and tried some eastwood coating on my exhaust manifolds, I ran the engine to break in the cam then it sat for about a month and they are starting to rust. Anybody have anything that works? I sandblasted the manifolds before applying and cleaned up well and applied 2 coats of this manifold coating, but it didn't last long.

 

-Yeah, I didn't have much luck with their manifold coating either... My best luck has been with a good quality hi-temp BBQ Grill paint. If you don't want black, there may be a silver available too. Cheap, and relatively long-lasting...

 

The maker of POR 15, Restomotive Laboratories, has an exhaust manifold-specific coating.

They claim its good to 1400 deg F and won't burn off. My friend used it on his ***mins 4B manifold and it still looks great. I believe it requires very careful prep.

A nice cheap alternative is Calyx manifold dressing, I used it a lot back when I was restoring Muscle cars and Corvettes. It's kind of a paste you rub on, heat doesn't seem to effect it at all but you will need to reapply it occasionally, like after pressure washing your engine. Come in a little container like cam lube, last tub I bought was like $15 and did 2-3 pair of manifolds.

I don't think your post to put 2 coats on of Eastwood , I think it says 1 medium coat . I have used this product for years with good luck .Were they wiped down with acetone or laquer thinner to remove all figer print oil ? I have 5 years on my sedan headers , no problems .

 

I have used what I believe to be a similar product. it is a hot metal mold release agent and is a graphite like paste. Works great on cast iron manifolds. Never tried it on tubing type headers. We had it at work (steel mill). I've attempted to find it through industrial supplier, but haven't had any luck.

 

Have them Jet-Hot coated ... and they will look like new for a long, long time.

This set on my Roadster has almost 50 thousand miles on them and still look great.

Bill Hirsch exhaust/manifold coating. 1600 - 2000 degrees and it doesn't flake off. I've got some in stock or you can get it at Bill Hirsch. Black, Cast, Aluminum, or Stainless steel.

 

I second that-I've used it and it works good-BUT-don't brush it on or you won't be nearly as satisfied.Also grinding the manifolds first makes for a better job and the paint fills in the scratches fairly good

 

a few years ago i used a brush-on coating from eastwood. looked great and lasted for years.

 

Ok lots of good options, maybe I somehow screwed up with the eastwood stuff, not cleaning enough. I figured freshly sandblasted would a pretty good prep.

 

Sounds like slip paint (or slip plate).

 

Has anybody ever used this stuff from Speedway? If it works like they advertise, I'd like to use it.

I used the POR 15 Manifold gray on the Mnifolds on our 67 Nova restore. They have been done now for 10 years and they still look good. I followed the directions to the letter, if that makes a difference.

 

I've used the Speedway stuff. Been 6 mos so far and it looks like the day I applied it.

 

I used the Eastwood silveror grey stuff about 10 years ago on new cast iron Fentons on my 235. followed directions and I think I might have baked them in the oven because the engine wasn't ready to fire when I put them on. Still looks good.
Tried the left over material on a set of tube headers and it wasn't as good.

But I thought I read in their catalog maybe 2 or 3 years ago that they now have an environmentally freindly version, new and improved, so ya know it ain't gonna work like the old stuff.

I have had real gool luck with the bbq paint you can get at walmarts. It works out great if you follow th directions and if you rub them down quickly after letting the motor run the paint almost has a glossy look to it rather than the satin black that wipes off on your hands that you get from the others. just my 2 cents
