Well, I've concluded a project my father and I have been working on for the past year--- dropping a 292 Y-block into my 1960 F-100. And man, does it feel good. Thanks a lot to the guys on this board who gave me invaluable advice and helped me find parts. It started a year ago, when I picked up this pile from eBay .... It turned over by hand, and that was good enough for me. I bid on it, won, and drove up with the '60 to pick it up. (It's a daily driver, and will continue to be.) I pulled the valve covers and found two bent pushrods. There were also an unnerving number of nutshells stashed in the exhaust ports. Some of the valves were being held open by the remains of some woodland creature's lunch. A teardown revealed that this motor had been rebuilt before, punched out to .020 over, and worn out. The babbitt was worn through on the rod bearings. This is why the project took me a year ... full rebuild! Had the block magna-fluxed (checked good), square-decked, and bored .040 over. The heads got milled enough to clean 'em up, valve guides reamed and new valves installed with oversize stems. Brand new stock cam, because the old one had rounded & chipped lobes. My father and I did all the ***embly at home. I read all the common ***embly errors from John Mummert's site and frequently checked in with the guys at Ford Truck Enthusiasts, as well as here, for advice along the way. Now that the project's done, I'm here to share pics & video with Y-Block enthusiasts and all the HAMBers. Now, on to the pics! I apologize in advance if anyone gets an unwanted peek at my undershorts ... The rebuilt short block back together. ECZ-C block, which I believe indicates '57 Ford. Heads back on, and starting to look like a motor again! ECZ-C heads ID as 1956. They came with Mercury valve covers on 'em. Here it is with a fresh coat of paint ... the color is flathead bronze. It looks amazing in the sun ... the metallic luster really comes out. Exhaust manifold gasket / heat shields ... going to be installed when I take the truck to the muffler shop to have a dual exhaust system made. I have a rams-horn manifold to run on the driver's side. Here's the video of the motor running, before it went into the truck. Now, on to the swap!! My motor waiting patiently while we fire up the '56 International tractor ... The carburetor is an Edelbrock 500cfm manual choke, sitting atop a '57+ four-barrel manifold. K&N filter element, under a cover whose source I choose not to disclose at this time. (post 1 of 2)
Convincing the old sixer to vacate ... It's free!! If you can't tell by my goofy grin, this is my first motor swap ... The ol' truck's feeling a little empty inside. Me and Pop shoehorning the Y into her new home. Keeping an eye on that distributor ... I had a persistent fear of crushing the dizzy against the firewall. And it's in! That crossover pipe is going to last only as long as it takes to get this thing to the muffler shop. And now, here's a quickie video I made with the 8-cylinder in my truck ... more to come, for sure. Thanks again to all the guys here on the HAMB that helped a young kid out on an exciting and satisfying project. And thanks to Ryan for bringing it all together. Hope you all enjoy the sights & sounds.
Nice! Sounds great. Post another vid when you get the duals hooked up! I'm real close to firing my y-block. I didn't do the full rebuild but rather a freshening/cleaning up. Hope it sounds as good as yours.
That is the nicest cherry picker you can use! I cant wait to stab my y block in my 53... i like the truck too....
Here's a picture of my '60 F100 that I pulled a running 6 banger out and droped in a '62 292 Y-Block. With the help of Mr. Y-Block the H.A.M.B.'s own "KustomKat" that thing rans like a top. I love those '57 to '60 F100s.
dude u are exactly like me, i have the inline 6 in my 58 fairlane, im swapping it out for a 292 y block i just got, this thread will come in very handy and so will u, expect some PM's in the future from me hahaha, great vids to, i have them on my favs on youtube, i love that first vid u got of it running open headers outside the truck
you're a ruler! y-block in an F100 is friggin' killer. you guys did good and you look like you're havin' a blast. ...thats what its about. seriously...ya'll might need more fire wood, though (hehe).
Damn man, what are you like 15? Out and in in a day?...I better get to work here, I feel like a slouch. Looks good, going to be much more fun with an 8.
Keep an eye out for some cab over F600 Y-block exhaust manifolds. They bolt on the trucks, look good & sound good. Getting hard to find & pricey lately
Motor sounds great and looks very nice. Love those y-blocks! Not sure how I missed this first time through, but great going on the swap.
Thumbs up!! When Mama goes to lookin' for her favorite cake cover, you better be out the door and hope that truck starts on the first go-round!
Yeah, he does. But have you seen the prices? I have one original ram's-horn that's on the driver's side right now. The right-side manifold is staying where it is, capped off at the front.
Hey good job! Glad to see an old y-block . Let me know if you need speed equipment for it . I have some I will sell soon. E
Father and son...Way to go! I'm jealous, I wish I had a new Y block to swap for my 223. Bet you can't wait till you're old enough to drive that thing...HA! Just kidding.
Hello, Im currently putting a 50s era sprint car back together and looking for those manifolds that were on your engine. My question is do you still have them are they for sale? I need those to accurately rebuild the car the way it was raced. If you dont have them , could you tell me what vehicle used those type? All I can find are the ones without the crossover. Thanks
