Was the transmission guy talking about the coolers that are integrated into the rad, or was he specifically referring to an auxiliary cooler?

No cooler at all seems odd. Is he going to be doing any towing?

Auto transmissions need a cooler to live. Often times, the rad integrated unit isn't enough.

I have to believe there's more to this story I'm missing, but I think that's what you asked.

Edit: Ah hah. Maybe his trans guy was telling him not to add to the rad unit. Sorry, should have read closer

$$$$$$$$$$$$ pay now or pay a short bit later. It won't last without any cooler

I can't see any way that an auxiliary cooler would hurt the transmission, but you can bet that no cooler would.

Must be one of those autos that doesn't need fluid either. I think you are giving the guy too much credit.

Your buddy might be hard to convince now, if he takes "professionals" opinions over better judgment.

My crown Vic Police Interceptor came with a factory aux cooler. My guess is the guy didn't notice that the rad. didn't have a cooler, or he's either a ***** or a crook.

I bracket race a car ( 8 inch 5000 flash convertor)without any cooler on it. If you are talking about the little 8 x 15 add on style I would say your buddies trans guy is correct.
We ran a larger one(it was a air conditioning condenser) for a year or so .We monitor trans temp for consistency purposes. The trans temp was pretty predicable, when it sprung a leak at a two day meet we took it off and looped the hoses. The fliud temps did not change.
We then purchased a large aftermarket unit and monitored the temps . With the fluid at 200 degrees the cooler lines showed 2 degrees reduction from inlet to outlet.when you figure only a small part of the pressured oil runs threw it I questioned it's usefullness.
I spoke to a nation wide performance trans builder and he ***ured me that I would have been better off adding to the fluid capacity than buying the cooler.
WE took the cooler off and installed a deep aluminum pan and temps dropped almost 15 degrees.
Now I would not recomend anyone not running a cooler but the next time you are pulling your trailer down the hyway stop and open the hood and point your heat gun at the cooler lines and see how much difference it is making.
    Let me know your results

Back in the day I ran a very hot 383 mopar with a 4000 (hemi) stall converter. I used the factory radiator cooler only. I sometimes raced 289 mustangs and such for money and the bet included that I would use only high gear! That makes a bunch of heat. Oh yea they had a guy to ride and make sure that I did not shift.I won a lot of cash doin that and only needed to take some time idling to cool the ******. No, no need for an aftermarket cooler' unless you are towing a heavy trailer or such. Just my opinion.

    thread from 2008.

if cars did not need trans coolers they would not be installed by the factory.

Ditto #8 !!!!!!!!!!! If the radiator has a cooler, add one "downstream" from that, in the return line. At approx 350 degrees, the fluid and trans will "go away"....
