I have an old metal mag rack out of a store. It will hold about 800 magazines. [IMG]

I have a couple of the shorter versions of this shelf (2-cube high) for my mags and books. They are great and the price is fantastic! Unusually good quality for IKEA!

I have pretty much every car magazine and book produced from 1948 though 1970 and all of my mags are in stuff from these guys http://www.bagsunlimited.com/

They have bags, cards and boxes.

I'm super picky and I think their stuff is great.

Do you really want to save space, or do you just like to flip through old magazines? If you really want to save space, I tear out articles of interest and file them by category... suspension, engine, etc... I throw the rest in recycle. You would be surprised at how little space this takes once you get advertisements and unwanted material out of there... It's next to nothing plus when I get around to wanting the imformation, I can go right to it in a regular filing cabinet. If you store ALL of your magazines, how do you find the article that you can't remember which magazine or issue it was in? You end up flipping through magazines for hours trying to find it. I know it's hard to give up all of the paper you've purchased, but what good does it do other than to impress your friends on how many magazines you have...

I agree. I got rid of my binders a few years ago in favor of cards and re-sealable bags.

what if you need an old advertizement?
or a feature on a car
or someone mentions "look in the background of the picture on page 21 of Hot Rod from june 1949"
    what will you do then????

    thats why i save them
theres always something you miss that if you throw it away you'll never find it again

to keep track of articles you can create a list on the computer and file the locations for the articles in that list, then keep the mags organized so you can easily go back and find what you need and also what you may not have know you needed on the page beside it!

maybe this is why i have so much junk??? :D

that is a good idea. i've considered tearing out the information i think i might want to go back to in the future but i just can't bring myself. i HATE it when someone rips one of my magazines (or i do it by accident). i don't have a ton of realy old ones but i do have a few and the ones that are'nt that old will be one day. i'd like to keep them nice. don't ask me why, i just do.

your preachin' to the choir, no need to explain :D

  11. i use "used" lateral files ...the mags are in holders like shown above..only narrower cheap plastic ones..
the file units have only four drawers with fold up doors that slide in .. most ya find have five drawers(they are not tall enuf)
.. the mag holders stand up and i get one year per holder 5 deep 4wide .. that would be 20 years per shelve /drawer... 80 years per unit.(two magazine titles per unit) my HOTROD-ROD AND CUSTOM are getting close to full
. i have recently added more units for a total of 4.. so i am good for a few more years

i buy these units at closeout office supply or bank closing auctions.. inever have paid more than 30 bucks for one .scratches and dents included... actual retail is /500-600

ill try and get ya apic...
they are mouse proof when shut!
    lockable

i have some of the " hot rod binders "they don't work for me

THANKS TO KIRK FOR SHRINKING DOWN THE GAZETTE...

I tear that stuff out too... I'm just offering a way to save space. If you need to keep all your magazines, it's definitely not the solution. Keeping a file on you computer is a great idea... until it crashes and you haven't backed it up in a while. If your going to do that every time you update it I would save it to an external storage device.

    FIREPLACE!!:D Just kidding.
What I'd love to do is scan every page of every magazine I own (1000's) and burn them to DVD. You could have your whole collection on a few discs! If you were really ambitious you could cross reference tech articles, features, years, etc. Anyone do this? -stick

  15. i have a extensive national geographic collection too... its all availible on 3 discs.. believe me that would be a space saver

its harder to view the old coke ads at xmas time tho.. i set them out around the house

Go to your local Comic book store and ask them for the magazine sized boxes. They sell them in either short or long boxes and will hold your magazines tight and are easily movable and stackable. If you want to get really crazy they also sell bags and boards to protect your mags individually. A real cheap and easy way to put your magazines away. Hope this helps.

Hundreds of mags stacked in boxes and plastic totes.

Just last week I bought all of the display racks from a music store going out of business.

Now things are looking a LOT better.

I have an extra few of the white racks for sale in the classifieds.

If you are going to store the magazines upright like that invest in the bags and boards. It keeps them looking nice and it will keep the bottom right corner from bending.

I am a little anal when it comes to the condition of my car magazines. With all the moving that I do I also need something to move them around in. I went out and bought some plastic office file bins, 11’x16 ½”x14 I think they were about $8 each. I also picked up some hanging folders, box of 25 around $3. I cut the metal strips off the folders, slide them in the center of the mag and let it hang. You can get between 60 and 70 in one bin. I am still working on the little books, any ideas?
I also started working on an excel spread sheet to locate magazines by bin and to cross reference subject matter.

If your like me I have tons of stuff, not only old car magazines and no place to put it all. Well I saw an old house trailer for sale, it was a 1959 or so, for a couple hundred bucks. My property was big enough to be able to park the trailer in my back yard and make like a small museum there!!!
When my wife and I first got married we lived in an old 50's trailer and the design inside and out go'es great with our life style. Not everyone can do this but it sure would make a neat place to store all your cool junk.
    Just a thought!

I have regular bookshelves (from the local oak furniture outlet; not fancy, but not by any means the cheapest way to go). One of the keys to getting good storage density is to stack the magazines flat. If you alternate years, with even years having binding on the left, odd years on the right, your stacks will stand straight better. Put the oldest magazines on the bottom, so when you get a new one it goes on top (don't ask how I figured this one out.....). Fill the spaces in between with your books. My library has Hot Rod back more than 40 years, and a few other titles almost as long. Takes two sides of an ordinary bedroom from the floor to seven feet. Looking for more space soon.

  24. I use the plastic file boxs. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

  25. I keep mine under my mattress so my mom won't find them.
