Hello, Speaking of VIN numbers... WARNING: The new car temporary license plates as issued to all sold cars in California have a drawback, that I (and many other people) do not understand. Why is a government en***y printing a vehicle's VIN number on a plate for all to see? That just does not seem right. "Vehicles sold by California licensed dealers and lessor-retailers after January 1, 2019 will be required to display temporary paper license plates or permanent license plates issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. ***embly Bill 516 mandates this new requirement." https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/templp What is the purpose of displaying the VIN numbers for everyone to see? Jnaki Inquiring minds would like to know why...
I seems that nowadays if you have a car that you have allowed the tags to expire or you stole it and you want to continue driving it, you go out and steal a temp paper plate from someone else's car and display it on yours. That works until you get stopped by law enforcement and a comparison is made between the VIN on the stolen paper plate and the VIN on your dashboard, then you have a major problem.
I use Vehicle History Reports everyday, this being a 99 not really a big deal, but they don't catch all accident history, you will still need to look it over, all I'm saying, don't just rely on the report. There are scenarios where u could buy a vehicle with clean history and days, weeks, months later, an accident could show up. I've even seen reports with no accident history and at the same time get a accident report for the same vehicle.
CARFAX is NOT 100% accurate. case and point off topic car I had got from auction, It was involved in a wreck, hit in the nose easy fix. The vehicles CARFAX showed NO accidents but yet car was hit. Owner only had liability insurance the car was towed (owner went to hospital) and then sold in auction when owner didn't pay to get it out of impound. If the vehicle is NOT serviced by the dealer or insurance wreck it will not show on a CARFAX. I have had many cars that way from the auction or impound yards.... Now keep in mind it is a PLUS when the police agency that has car towed does not mark the box in what condition car is in.
I don't see any problem with displaying the VIN number on the permit. Like was mentioned, it's easily visible through the windshield from ten feet away. Most of the ads on Craigslist around where I live the sellers put the VIN right in the ad so you can run a Carfax or history check or whatever you want. It's not exactly top secret stuff.
