i dont know if anyone caught it but on ESPN, one of those auction shows had some of Roth's cars on. the 76' GSB went for 42,000 if i remember correctly, the 87' globe hopper went for somewhere around 100,000 and i believe the last was the beatnik bandit( number 1), cant remember but it was a little over 100,000. one thing they said that didnt sound correct is that the globe hopper was his last project, i could have sworn he had atleast 2 after that.
Beatnik bandit 2 in 95 and Stelth 2000 in 2000. Also the La zoom in 89 (not finished) and he was working on a v8 trike when he died. I thought it was odd too what they were saying. typical auction bs
I saw that about a month ago and thought that statement was wrong also. If I remember correctly the first two went to the same bidder.
Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was a huge influence on me. I can remember any magazine you read back in the day had a ad for his t-shirts or one of his wild creations featured. Anyone who bought any of his cars at auction has a piece of real hotrod history. He was quite the innovator. RIP
I met Roth, at a 95 show, in Cincinnati He had the Beatnik bandit 2 with him. as we talked, he mentioned that it was for sale. I asked "how much"? He said, and I quote..."$30,000".... I don't know if he was kidding or not. I had no cash at the time, but I tried for weeks, to figure out how to buy it.....
I was reading through some old Cl***ifieds in some old Hot Rod magazines (60's). There was an add for the Beatnik Bandit. The add read, "For more info contact Mr. Roth" then it listed his address. I'm sure the price was far from 100,000.......
Dave Shuten's Astro Sled went for $87K, I think... The Dave Navarro-looking guy got the Globe hopper for $105K
WTF I just saw the Globe Hopper just this last Friday in Van Nuys. Was that the real one at the auction? Which auction was this. BB
