I just got tags, insurance etc on my 66 C10. First (legal) time on the road, it starts spitting and sputtering. I just rebuilt the carb a few weeks ago and had all the bugs worked out........I thought. Long story short I pulled the carb back off after it won't even idle any more. It sounded like a tractor, can't hear cam any more. Carb is full of a bunch of rust. I cleaned it up, put it back on, still sounds like ****. How can I clean/flush the tank out and avoid this in the future?

    thanks,

Most radiator shops offer gas tank cleaning / sealing, but you can just about buy a brand-new tank for what they charge.

This may sound kinda redneck, but I`ve poured a couple hundred bb`s into the tank (after removing it) and sloshed the tank around. The idea being that the bb`s would knock most of the rust / scale loose. Then install a clear fuel filter at the tank and another just in front of fuel pump and yet a third one in front of carb. You may have to change out the filters regularly until you get all the **** out of tank. I use some el cheapo clear plastic fuel filters from OReilly`s for $1.99 each.

    Good luck.

I put a see thru-gl*** filter on it. I can see some **** floating around, but some of it is so tiny it is getting past the filter. The frustrating part to me is it was running great when I was driving it around with no insurance, tags etc...lol

Eastwood sells a gas tank coating system, that has worked a couple of times for me. You use a couple different things to clean it out real good then apply the coating, the directions are in the kit. When cleaning it out I added some nuts and bolts and they helped clean out the rust. Before adding the coating I could see inside the tank and it looked like clean bare metal. I haven't had any problems since.

I use a complete gas tank cleaning/sealing system by KBS-coatings. You can empty it, clean it, use something (bb's are fine) to knock off the flaking rust, then use this system of cleaning and sealing. Works like a charm for a reasonable sum.
